Eels legend Peter Sterling has voiced his distaste over Dylan Brown’s comments regarding his next rugby league contract talks.
During the week, Brown told reported he will “go fishing” and listen to offers from other clubs when he becomes a free agent as of November 1, which Sterling took exception to.
“The last thing we should be talking about now is money,” Sterling told Triple M.
“He had a really good debut last week and the club have looked after him.
“I would like to think that those sorts of conversations would come a little further down the track.
Blake Austin was an established first grader when he decided to take this stance.”
Brown is one game into what will potentially be a glittering rugby league career, with reports suggesting he is set to earn in excess of $3 million when he negotiates his next contract.
Brown is signed until the end of 2020, but is free to negotiate at the end of this season, however Sterling felt he was wrong to publicly voice his plans in the manner he did so early into his first grade career.
“I understand the nature of the beast and how it’s a business but I was still disappointed,” Sterling said.
“Having said that if you are asked a question you answer it and that is obviously what Dylan did.
“I didn’t like the fishing component that was mentioned in there.
“But I would like to think when the time comes to be making decisions that he will consider where he got a start and who has been looking after him the last couple of years, but I do have a vested interest obviously.”

Well said Sterlo. "I still have a vested interest obviously" love it.
Here's hoping we give the dogs a flogging today.
Again the Eels make headlines and click bait.
Thinking about this scenario it is no different to any other player coming on the market imo.
We watched a considerable number of players getting mentioned shopping around last year, an 18 year old kid has a lot to learn about contract negotiations and keepinng his cards close to his chest.
It is a business and players have a short window to secure their own futures.
Don't know what the current "average" length of a FG player's career is these days, but if they are not looking after themselves sometimes clubs will not be forthcoming with the best deal they can pencil into a contract.
Club and fan loyalty no longer exists in RL, maximum personal benefits for a short period of time is paramount to mangers and players alike.
The other side of this coin is the vested interests who maybe trying to get Eels fans offside to enhance their chances of signing Brown because he gets the feeling the Eels fans no longer like or respect him.
Its all a gam epeople.
How many times before have we seen similar situations with naive players whose managers manipulate them into a better deal for the manager?
Does the statement "I didn't even know the Eels made an offer," ring any bells?
I think the average for a first grader is 41 games.
Spot on sterlo. If that's what brown.reportedly said, it looks like he's being influenced by his manager or family, Dylan needs to pull his head in and think consider his teammates and club before he speaks to any media . He is putting himself before the team and the club.
I also feel compassion for Brown and it may just be his way of dealing with the pressure at only 18. Id like to give him a fair bit of slack here and so should Sterlo. He could well be playing SG ball...or Flegg at 18, or even Schoolboys
Fair comment Chief, but how else is Brown going to learn if no one lets him know he is not doing himself, or his current team any favours by being publicly seen as an inexperienced 18 year old kid who is way out of his depth?
Watched a movie last night with a classic comment - "Good choices are made from experience, experience comes from making bad choices."
An obviously inexperienced 18 yo (life experience) considering moving to NZ to chase the money could be the very thing that destroys him and his career.
Hope he has good mentors around him and not people looking to exploit him for their own advantage.
Thanks Mick.
Massive LOL @ Athur Boarding House.
The Brad Arthur Boarding House for Wayward Eels PLayers?
Perhaps the words the he uses ""Go FIshing"" may be literal. For those who go fishing you will not catch any fish without bait, to me its quite possible that he is using bait for those who interviewed him as to his future. The other aspect is even when you use bait, you end up with no bites either.
Dylan made a comment most 18year olds would have made, because he is reading and hearing or the chatter.
Right now he is worth around 200k, now lets see if he turns potential into reality.
On a dry track lets see how he goes against a good half in Foran.
If his as good as the noise says, Eels are in the box seat to keep him.
