In a season of too few wins, Parramatta have at least been able to develop something of a reputation as a team who have at least turn up to every match and can be counted upon to fight and scrap in every match. Against Souths tonight, they showed none of that as they were flogged 56 to six by South Sydney in one of the worse Eels performances in recent memory.
If you’re trying to find a bright side, there was only really one - that Chris Sandow will be playing in Blue and Gold next year. Sandow was impressive tonight. He, Isaac Luke and Nathan Merritt, simply carved the Eels up around the ruck letting Greg Inglis and the Souths outside backs run riot.
Most of the damage was done in the first half when Souths racked up six tries and were probably unfortunate not to score a point a minute. I don’t have the stomach to give you a blow-by-blow report of that abomination, but take it as given that Souths were able to crack the Eels defensive line at will. It bore no resemblance to how Parramatta has played for most of the past ten weeks or so, and coach Stephen Kearney would have been disgusted at the lack of commitment and energy that his team displayed in defence.
Parramatta then gave up an early try in the second half and it looked like it might be anything. However, it looked like they might steady the ship when Jarryd Hayne produced a neat chip kick for Luke Burt who collected a bounce off the crossbar to touch down under the posts to make it 38 to six. But then Souths hit the accelerator again and scored three more with Nathan Merritt bringing up five tries in the 56 to six rout - their biggest ever victory against the Eels.
Fuifui Moimoi was easily the best of the Eels. He made plenty of metres and trampled bunnies all night. The only other points worth noting were logistical - Justin Poore returned from injury and Rory Brien made his debut.
If this season was meant to be a learning experience, then Stephen Kearney can pin this result to the wall as a performance that he will never, ever want one of his sides to repeat again.

There is no justifying how terrible we were tonight. We haven't been that bad in so long. The boys look like they had just given up. Knowing they can't make the eight and not giving a f***!
I thought this might be the case when the boys were talking on twitter about mad monday a little too prematurely. Disgusting, woeful and downright shameful.
Is Chris Sandow thinking "What the fuck have I got myself into bra?"
Words can't describe how bad we were.
