The Parramatta Eels are pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Russell as an NRL Assistant Coach, effective from the 2027 season.
Russell joins the Eels after more than a decade of coaching experience across elite rugby league pathways and high-performance programs, most recently with the Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters.
Widely respected for his disciplined approach and attention to detail, Russell has built a reputation as a defensively minded coach who consistently develops players and teams to perform at a high level.
Parramatta Eels Head Coach Jason Ryles said Russell's experience and proven record of success made him an outstanding addition to the Club's coaching staff.
"Mark is an experienced coach with a strong track record of success across several high-performing systems," Ryles said.
"What stood out to me is his attention to detail, particularly on the defensive side of the game, and the way he genuinely cares for the people he coaches.
"He's someone who values discipline, accountability and hard work, while also creating an environment where players feel supported and can grow. We're excited to have him join our coaching staff and contribute to what we're building at Parramatta."
Russell served as Head Coach of the Melbourne Storm's Jersey Flegg Cup side, leading the team to the 2025 premiership. Most recently he held key development roles as NSW Cup Head Coach and Senior Academy Coach, helping nurture emerging talent while contributing to successful high-performance environments.
Russell joins the Eels following the recent departure of Assistant Coach Sam Moa. The Eels thank Sam for his contribution and wish him all the best for the future.

Moa's philosophy was defence also.
Yes I know that but different defensive philosophies. You think every defensive coach has same philosophies?
I'm sure defence would be part of it.
Jeez really? Never would have thought.
Every defensive coach would have their own ideas on how teams should defend. Russell's would be different to Moa. Not 100% different but there would be differences.
But only a few get it right
I can see the various "haters" on the site licking their lips at the potential of a failure and how clever they were after feasting on what ever blood is in the water.
No doubt that any failures will come back on him as the reason and the fools that allowed Ryles to give another job to his mate.....from what I can tell he is very well qualified and highly regarded, but to be honest I don't know enough to be a judge.
What I do know is that I will not be in the lineup with my knife if he doesn't make the impression like our onsite warrior assisins at first sign of a fcuk up!
It never ceases to amaze me as human beings how we delight in being the "scooper" in identifying the first signs of any weakness......an extension of that is listening to another site expert who has spent 5 minutes in understanding what makes or breaks a young up and comer and then says he will be the greatest.
We all see our children in a wonderful light untill we see the finalists and realise they really are not that "hot"......hence Forest Gump wasn't recognised until he had more speed than his distractors! he learnt to runaway faster than the people that deride him.
