Indicators of improvement

With the season bout to begin and the trial this Saturday what are the indicators you will look for to see if Parra are to be a force the s season. Will it be a win? The speed of the ruck? The win in the wrestle? Winning the penalty count or even a narrow loss?I'm keen to hear your thoughts just so when I watch the trial this Saturday I'll have a feeling if where on the up or its gonna be a long season.Your thoughts?

  • Defense
Not falling in a heap with 20 to go
  • Play a full 80 minutes and not clock off after 60 minuets
  • line speed and cover defence as well as support play. All attitude based indicators. I'm hoping as a result our kicking game and game management improves as a result.
  • When the expected Rd 1 team are on the field I will be looking at the:

    1. Kicking game

    2. Line speed

    3. Ball movement through the backline

    4. Communication between the centers and wingers

    • When the the rest of the Top 25 are on the field I'll be looking at the:

      1. Support play

      2. Line speed

  • Fuuuuuuui i agree. In fact line speed and support play are the two standouts for me and this shows how hungry and up for the game the team is - something we have lacked since 09.

  • - Halfback not getting tackled on the 4th tackle when attacking try line.
    - Having a plan when we get near opposition try line and not just giving it to a forward for no reason.
    - Getting repeat sets/forcing line dropouts.
    - Good decoy runs.
  • > Defence (especially late in the game & even more so on the goal-line)
    > Calm under pressure - how well we can grind and come from behind late if needed to without going the miracle play
    > How Gordon plays at fullback - will he be a ball runner like at Cronulla or does he actually have a passing game?
    > The #9 role - what does Peats have in attack? How are the others (mainly King) comparatively?
    > Jennings - what will he add and how hungry is he?

I think at some point during the year the attack will definitely gel, could be Saturday, could be round 5. But our defence will decide how we go this year, it just has to improve in a major way and we need to come up with big tackles and big stops when the opponent has the momentum. Being able to stop the opponent (we couldn't do it last year) when they get on a roll (Cowboys game..) and then being able to march up the other end and score is what the good sides do. Souths were so good at this during late 2014, early 2015.
  • For me the best sign of a good start to the season is no injuries
  • Interesting question. Will be wondering if what I was seeing in the Nines was an aberration or just a Nines thing:

    - great defence with attitude
    - well structured attack (incl dummy half)
    - passionate attitude & body language/confidence, composure handling pressure when things go against us (big weakness for us in the past).

I'd expect with the leadership & hard heads we have now we'd be better on all 3 counts.

Will be interesting to see the strategies Arthur uses to new inter-change rules.
