I want Hayne's jumper. Gordon

November 13th 2015, 5:08 amI want Hayne's jumper, says GordonMichael Gordon. (Getty)Parramatta recruit Michael Gordon is planning on tackling one of the NRL's toughest assignments in 2016 - making Jarryd Hayne's Eels fullback spot his own. After attempting to leave Cronulla mid-season in 2015, Gordon has arrived at Parramatta later than he had anticipated. But with Reece Robinson's defection to rugby union and Will Hopoate's future with the Eels up in the air due to a contract dispute, Gordon has the inside running for the club's No.1 jumper. And the 32-year-old wants to be the first player to cement his spot at the back for the Eels since Jarryd Hayne left to pursue his NFL dream at the end of the 2014 season."I have to earn it first and foremost, I am under no illusions about what I have to do, but that is the goal and if I deserve it I deserve it," Gordon said."At the moment I am just here to train hard and do the typical preseason stuff and when we start playing footy hopefully I can cement that spot."Gordon was lured to the Eels by coach Brad Arthur with a view to him playing fullback, but the former NSW State of Origin representative says the tough times he experienced at the Sharks taught him not to take anything for granted."There are no guarantees in this sport, I would like to think there are but I learned a long time ago that's not the case," Gordon said."Brad told me he wanted me to play fullback and I have come here to do that but if I don't play there I am not going to kick up stones or anything like that."I am here to earn the respect of my teammates first and then we will see what happens."http://www.ninemsn.com.au/article/9052557

  • Not a ground reaking read but got to like the attitude

  • Errrr no, that's not going to happen.

  • Clearly Mick's attitude is the reason BA wanted him on board. Hopefully it's infectious.

In any case, it hasn't been Hayne's spot for a year now. I certainly don't remember him playing there this year....

    • Still, I will always recall Hayne and erasing those memories is tanamount to treason!

But..........I'm confident Gordon will be good for us at the back, with his goal-kicking a bonus.

  • No he didn't say he wants 'Haynes Jumper', that would be a stupid thing to say and It's only a cheap headline by the Parrarazzi to get a few extra hits.
What he did say was far better... "he wants to earn the respect of his teammates and see what happens"
He will be great for us at the back, we couldn't have chosen better for us at the moment and our inexperienced backline.
  • Tah for the juicy worm Wiz! And I agree those guys are morons for offering said jumpers at a loss.

Anyone, anybody at all Wiz who discounts Hayne displays poor judgement.

  • Surely the club can afford to buy him his own jumper.

Maybe Hoppa can buy him one with his payout.
  • Haha Wiz, you can now make that 31.

  • 32 years old. Fullback pops. Hey popsy.
  • If Michael Gordon stays fit, he will be a tremendous buy for us.

He is a classic fullback and has played SOO on the wing. He has pace, strength and reads a game very well from the back and kicks goals at a high %

As mentioned by Rev snoop and others MG's attitude is what made "clubman of the year at Cronulla twice"

People are always concerned about footy players age, and rightly so when they reach 34 or 35, but history show guys who are seasoned footy players who've played between 100 -150 NRL games know what they have to do to continue to perform at that level. If they don't have chronic injuries the majority of these players make it their mid 30's before they retire.
