Come to the end of year 2 of the Ryles tenure, it has led to a slightly more clearer look to what the future of the club under his watch could be like. With two years left on his deal, 2027 poses to be, purely by the way things work, that 2027 is the biggest year of Ryles' short career as a coach. Could be the year of Ryles' coaching career. There are a few things that work against him in terms of feeling comfortable for the upcoming season. I am not saying Ryles should be gone, i am simply leading in that realistically it is how it works in coaching, Ryles himself would admit that.
The pressure has now started to rise, it will continue well into the off-season. Why? Well there are a few reasons why the pressure will be on Ryles.
Third year, no finals as of yet: Very rarely do we see NRL coaches in general make it to year 4 without appearing in the semi's. BA took til his 4th year to make first finals appearance, though his third season he would have made it, if not for cap drama. Benji Marshall right now is into year 4 without a finals appearance, but other than that it is very rare for a coach to last to year 4 without finals. Is that fair to have against Ryles? Depends who you ask. Though let's be real, it is a results driven business and no finals in three seasons means more losses than wins in that time. Making finals can do wonders to a squad a coach.
New CEO leads to uncertainty: This to me is a big factor. Jim Sarantinos is who hired Ryles. Not on his own but he had a big say on who would coach the Eels post Brad Arthur. Now, if Ryles had a bad 2027 and Sarantinos is still here there is a chance he pulls the trigger on Ryles. But, since he hired him, as is the case with most CEO's who hire a coach, there is more patience with people you hire compared to those watching someone they inherited. With a new CEO coming in, Ryles is vulnerable. It goes from is the vision on the right track to what i want, to are they getting results? It is very likely Sarantinos' vision is very similar to Ryles' in terms of what the on field product should be eventually. The new CEO could have a different vision, is Ryles in the way of that vision?
What helps change that? Winning. If Ryles guides us to a top 8 finish, even scraping into the 8, he is safe no matter what happens. He still wouldn't be in the clear but the pressure is off from the media at least. Though if he starts slow again, like previous years, and gets to Round 10 with only 2-3 wins, then questions are going to be asked. CEO i doubt pulls the trigger mid year but he is scouting his replacement. Injuries were in his favour this year, i feel next year not so much with a new CEO. They could very well want their own person. Reason they wait is to not ruffle the feathers of the joint so quickly. CEO's more likely rather get their feet under the desk, see how things run then make changes in accordance to what they want.
Ryles changing staff and some signings indicate his realisation: Signing Luai when he did and moving on Moa and possibly Brown can show Ryles is in survival mode. He is looking for changes. It is healthy for a coach to change staff, though with our defence being so bad over the past two seasons.
Disrupted pre-season: If the board or even CEO (if hired already) had any consideration of moving Ryles now, the thing that would have saved him is the upcoming disrupted pre-season. With a World Cup and Vegas, the teams pre-season is shorter and a lot of the stars, instead of returning late November to early December, return early to mid January. How does that hinder preparation? Who knows. At least Ryles is no longer a rookie where a disruption might be as catastrophic, compared to if it was 2025 or 2026. But there is still disruption. Can that work against him? Well based on our starts in both 2025 and 2026, it could. Considering both seasons we conceded 50+ in both Rounds 1 and Rounds 6. First 10 games in 2025 we had 3 wins. In 2026, 4 wins. So we have poor starts under Ryles, a disrupted pre-season might not help in a push to great start to our 2027 season. If we have a bad start, the snowball could happen in the perception of the new CEO.
Then there is a big position the club are in with Ryles for 2027. Being off-contract, i believe it is so important to have a coach go into a season under contract for the future. Now, granted, Dragons signed players without a coach and NQ did ok with some recruitment while Payten was off-contract. But i feel it is much more safer for recruitment to have a coach signed up into the future. Come to the end of 2027, Ryles either has an extension or is gone. That is realistically how it could be viewed. Big decisions for the club moving forward on their direction for Ryles post 2028. Also, it has been rumoured that Ryles' final season is a CO. That is usually in most coaching contracts that the final season is an option in the clubs favour. That makes is easier to move him after the 2027 season.
Will signings help? Well so far with Su'A, Luai and Leniu, he has added a lot of experience. He has added players that are constant first graders. They are better than what we have. He has made it known a Centre is now the priority. I also think a Winger could be good also. Is it enough, if staying fit, to make the 8? Of course it is. Any squad can scrape into the 8 with a good season. Though the people he wants, Bradman Best the no.1, will Ryles be here to coach? Will he run out of time waiting for the right reinforcements.
An added point is if the club decide to move on after 2027, the club need to know who they want and get them. But who? Bennett? Cleary? These are long shots but whoever it is they choose, they have to have their man and go for them. Another rookie is not the way to go, but if they choose to go with a rookie, choose one from the start and get them. None of this interviewing and see who comes out on top by process of elimination.

Look at your own logic, you bring up Sticky to support your claim that 'every coach who misses the 8 is under some pressure,' and then immediately admit he's protected. Is that 'Every' coach then? Plus you say Robinson who made top 4. No idea where you are going with that.
That literally disproves your point, by acknowledging Sticky is immune, you prove that missing the top 8 doesn't create automatic pressure across the board. So if Craig Fitzgibbon misses the 8 next year, after 5 straight seasons of doing so, he is under some pressure straight away? Pressure, whether big or small, isn't an automatic blanket rule for missing finals, it’s driven entirely by context and where a team sits in its cycle
Trying to normalize missing finals as 'no big deal' for everyone just downplays Ryles' timeline. Year 1 with a broken cap and roster gets a pass, but by Year 3, the grace period is over. No matter how much you try to lump every coach into the same bracket. Missing the finals three years in a row is most times a death sentence, particularly for first time coaches. Is it fair? Maybe not but it is realistic.
LB, I have a great grip thanks very much; again you missed my point. All coaches are under pressure; more so if you don't make the 8 and you can have varied reasons for this. Stuart has mates in the media - he did well last year but they bombed out.
Robinson has a team with many rep players - he should be making the 8 / top 4 each year like Madge.
I do not think I downplayed JR at all - I have always said by the end of year 3 we will get a good picture of things - stop reading into things mate. The Club and JR both said from 2025 that there would be no more Player options etc and he cleaned the joint out and still is and I said he had a lot of injuries this year; JR would know he's under pressure. He has worked with Melb and Easts and knows the way it works.
Ricky should be under pressure as he has bene at Canberra for a while....12 plus years and from memory his overall winning % is a bees knees over 50

It's all about results and at some point JR has to have them or the pressure mentioned in this piece will come to fruition.
My own opinion is that there's always going to be something missing with Parramatta they'll never get everything right to bring premiership glory.The margins are so small now with more teams being entered in the comp aren't getting harder to find I feel we are a few years and breaks away from anything.

As long as the club takes a decent step forward in 2027 Ryles will be ok, if it's another struggle then yep he's in trouble lol. Pretty much that simple. Don't have to win the comp in 27 but take some strides forward for sure
If we finish bottom 4 next year he will be sacked.

I think Ryles is doing good atm, we don't have a star studded line up either, for the players he has doing a good job. But definitely need to buy a few decent players in the off season & our pathways are looking good atm too, particularly in the forwards so there is improvements since BA days
I'll say Madge is the coach under the most pressure. With a team full of rep players where does it all go so wrong, players are walking away, the Reynolds situation hasn't helped with some players are very dirty of what the coach & club did to their mate. Then theirs Ciraldo, not sure if Gould or him are under the most pressure. Let's not forget they tampered with a top 4 side, dismantled their spine & destroyed all their chances of being a top 8 side. That's their own doing by making stupid decisions. Tigers, boy they self implode by having no spirit, no hart, no loyalty to the colours or badge. This is a perfect example of buying or attracting players with money that may not fit the culture of the club. They are quiet happy to recruit players from all clubs but when one player wants to leave, they handle things very poorly & the season goes down the drain. Benji is trying his hart out but we knew, first grade was going to test him at every level & he has failed. I think Ryles has had a plan from day one, his decisions have had purpose & in the process he uncovered superstars of the future. If clubs like the Raiders & Storm can make excuses that they failed due to injuries, Ryles has never used that as an excuse. He has used this opportunity to bring up young juniors & see if they are NRL material. We've lost some tight games because these guys have ran out of gas in the second half. With a few new recruits I think the Eels will finish close if not top 8, senior players need to improve, what they dish up at times is not acceptable. These players need to be at their best every game & they have made some mistakes that have cost us games, not good enough. The top sides are big, strong, fast we ain't their yet but it's not out of our reach, hard work will improve our standing it's starts now.
See, Madge yes, but i see Marshall as 2nd most under pressure. Ciraldo would be under more pressure only due to Gus to be fair. He is signed til 2030, same as Benji, but sometimes clubs do not really care and just pay them out.

This is ridiculous from Brent Read. Probably influenced by the mid season sook by Peter Badel. If I look at Parramattas performances this year I can only think of 1 game where we were totally outplayed and didnt put in amd that was the Titans game at Commbank. All oyher games with a second grade team we have been fighting hard and in the game! We should have beaten the Panthers and Warriors except for some ridiculous referring decisions. We were in yhe game leading the Roosters up to halfway through the second half. We beat the sharks and cowboys twice. We could have beaten the knights and could have come back in the second half against the bunnies. Its the way we play that is important and Ryles instills that! He should at the very least play out his contract!
Until the R&R are overhauled, Ryles won't succeed. New CEO is going to be critical on how this all plays out for Ryles.
Pretty sure he said the hardest thing about coaching is recruitment. He has overhauled the roster and now that Matterson is gone, he now gets some clear air with $$$ to spend. He's blooded a lot of youngsters and as he says, the only way to get NRL experience is to get them to play NRL. It took the Roosters years to get Sam Walker to where he is now, but he had the luxury of a team full of experience around him to take the pressure off him. Ryles has tried to fast track it by debuting so many youngsters. His persistence with Da Silva is fast tracking for mine. Now it's up to the CEO to make the changes in recruitment to give Ryles the best shot at success. Get Peter O'Sullivan, what he has done with the Dolphins and Knights rosters is exactly what we need.
Where Ryles (and Bellamy I might add) came unstuck this year was the ridiculous 6 agains that plagued the first 10 rounds. I think the rule changes didn't fit either roster and we suffered a pretty serious injury toll as a result. Thank god the NRL realised this shit was destroying the game with 50+ blow outs a weekly occurrence. Lets hope we don't see a reoccurence of this next season.
With the coaching ranks being overhauled, and some signings I hope we get post Nov 1, I would expect a upward trajectory from here. He needs to improve the results in 2027 no question. Being the same or thereabouts, I think most fans will lose confidence in him. But I'm still a believer. He just needs the time to bring these changes in. You cannot build Rome in a day as they say.
