The Parramatta Eels are pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Russell as an NRL Assistant Coach, effective from the 2027 season.

Russell joins the Eels after more than a decade of coaching experience across elite rugby league pathways and high-performance programs, most recently with the Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters.

Widely respected for his disciplined approach and attention to detail, Russell has built a reputation as a defensively minded coach who consistently develops players and teams to perform at a high level.

Parramatta Eels Head Coach Jason Ryles said Russell's experience and proven record of success made him an outstanding addition to the Club's coaching staff.

"Mark is an experienced coach with a strong track record of success across several high-performing systems," Ryles said.

"What stood out to me is his attention to detail, particularly on the defensive side of the game, and the way he genuinely cares for the people he coaches.

"He's someone who values discipline, accountability and hard work, while also creating an environment where players feel supported and can grow. We're excited to have him join our coaching staff and contribute to what we're building at Parramatta."

Russell served as Head Coach of the Melbourne Storm's Jersey Flegg Cup side, leading the team to the 2025 premiership. Most recently he held key development roles as NSW Cup Head Coach and Senior Academy Coach, helping nurture emerging talent while contributing to successful high-performance environments.

Russell joins the Eels following the recent departure of Assistant Coach Sam Moa. The Eels thank Sam for his contribution and wish him all the best for the future.

  • Yessirrrrr

  • Am I reading correct that Storms Flegg side finished 3rd last this year  ?

    • No NSW Cup he coaches 2nd last this year. Flegg he coaches last year and they came 1st and made a GF.

      • Ahhh ok.  So as someone who didn't follow much NSW Cup, did he have good reason to have finished so badly ? Or didn't he fluke last year ?

Just wondering why we are excited over thus dude ? Again I know nothing about him or his abilities? On the surface it seems like Ryles is giving another mate a job ?

        • He got to the JF grand final and finished first with the flegg storm side in 2025.

        • Storms first year with a NSW cup side

        • Just like our nsw cup side, storm nsw cup side is a bunch of weaker/no name players due to injuries in the NRL team.

        • The Storm had heaps of injuries which is why they sucked in the top two grades, just like us.

  • This is massive for us. Proven defensive coach finally.

    • His philosophy revolves around long defensive stretches. Grinding the opposition and being able to defend numerous sets in a row.

Hopefully that means a new S&C coach too. Moa was recommended to him for assistant role, he only had 1-2 years as an assistant before coming to us. Russell has been in the game for a while in coaching so that's a plus. Let's see how it goes.

"You literally said 'All' coaches are under pressure. But Stuart is not due to having mates in the media. So is it all of them or not? If it is all, then why are you justifying that Stuart has mates meaning he is not under pressure. Saying Ricky…"

"Also, 'bargain' is subjective, the NRL would still have to approve the contract and with what we've seen from PNG, he would still need to be offered a market value for a first grade half back otherwise the contract wouldnt be registered"
