How do you think Madge would have gone with Parra ?

Remember Madge was also in the running for the eels job ? I wonder how that would have turned out ? 😂 seems like he's a coach who needs top tier stars to be any good so probably would have ended badly 😂

      • That probably says more about the fit between Ryles and Parra. He knew that his plan would work here, and he used the club's strengths to get better results. I get the feeling that the other prospective coaches couldn't convince the club in this regard.

Madge is a good coach, but I don't know that we would be in the same position as we are in now with a different coach.

        • Agree, Ryles saw something and took a risk. The allure for someone like that is "can I be the one who breaks the drought".

Madge would make us fitter and harder. I reckon we are better than 15th but the issue with Madge who I've defended is he has a shelf life. Would he have the time to turnover the roster at a pace to win a comp before he goes stale at the joint?

  • I remember he turned us down .

    • He did. But it was only due to his unwavering commitment to NSW. Funny how his commitment suddenly meant jack shit as soon as the broncos job came up.

      • I respect maguire and wish him well with brisbane this weekend.

How would he have gone with parra?  he would have gone ok but he would not have the vision that Ryles has created along with a policy of youth and starting from the ground up. Ryles may yet fail but his approach is the best one for our future. Buying a premiership will not solve our ills, we should be " supporting" the development of a power house, not one off "sugar pills".

I don't think there would be innovative with Madge, more of the same (BA style

        • Good point. The thing he added to Broncos was toughness.

  • He would have done no better than he did at Wests. He needs to be handed a superstar roster to be successful.

    • Yeah handed a lot at Souths where he had 5 players already there and established.

Funny that, star players need to succeed.

      • LB, how did he develop:

Greg Inglis, Dylan Walker, the Burgess brothers, John Sutton, Lote Tuqiri? How did he develop Luke Keary, Adam Reynolds and Alex Johnston who were always going to be bona-fide stars?

He did inherit a very strong roster.

That said, his coaching style is a case of horses for courses. He obviously can coach but he's not going to be good fit for every team.

        • Did i say he developed those 5?, i said he had players already there and he bought others to come in. He developed the kids of Reynolds, Keary, Walker, Johnston, Auva'a, Turner and Koroisau who got a debut under Madge. Well Bellamy then you could say was given a strong roster at Melbourne with Smith, Cronk, Inglis and Slater who were always going to be bona-fide stars? But yet everyone here wanted us to sign him as a coach, but why since he just inherited a strong squad?

He inherited a strong roster: Here are the players that were at the club in 2011 when he started that featured in 2014 GF charge; Burgess, Inglis, Sutton, Tyrell, Clark, Luke, McQueen. The rest he either blooded or bought. I just do not understand how that is "inheriting a strong roster". Is it juniors as well? As no guarentees juniors work out. Now Brisbane he had a great squad there, that is what makes the job attractive. But it is a poison chalice as whoever takes the gig would be branded as byproduct of the squad, how is that their fault? An ok coach doesn't win a comp with a great team.

Right so if that is the case, why give Ryles credit for Iongi if he was going to be a star? Ryley Smith had a great year, nothing to do with Ryles then. Kautoga was a nobody now is a half decent player, nothing to do with Ryles, since he could have been a bona-fide star anyway.

With all due respect Bourbon, the comment that how can a coach develop a player that were always going to be bona-fide stars would say what is the point of coaches. If so, then who cares how Ryles is going. Who cares who we hired after BA, hell why care if BA is here. It is not on the coach. Seriously, it is one thing with this thread that has annoyed me. People say "He needs a good squad to succeed", "only won a premiership from a good squad". Guess what? All teams that win comps have great squads, go figure.

He brought in Tuqiri for experience, he brought in Te'o needing a great edge back-rower, brought in George and Tom for punch with Sam. Then he debuted Turner, Johnston and Auva'a, 3 debutants winning comps in year 1 is rare in a 17. Keary only played 20 odd games going into that GF. Reynolds was coming off an ACL the year before. Dylan Walker was in year 2. If certain players are bona-fide stars guarenteed then why play them in Cup to develop? Just throw them in.

Ash Taylor was going to be a bona-fide star, what happened? He turned out to not be very good. A good coach develops them how they should come up through the grades. Granted, there are some players that regardless of coaching can turn out well, but those in bad systems might not be as good as they can be.

Your last part is right, though i am defending him i admit he has a very short shelf life due to his forceful coaching. Which is where Brisbane are in a good spot, get a premiership out of the way before the players are over him. Which is where i felt the fit with Parra was not good, he would be better suited in say 2022, the squad was there just needed someone different to get over the hump, he would not be good for our current situation.

Madge is a great coach, regardless of many here not giving him credit for his work with Souths. Just thinking he sat back and let the players do the rest. If so, if that is all it is why abuse BA for his job with the team? If it is as simple as getting inheriting a strong roster then who cares who the coach is.
