Jarryd Hayne has been named for the Eels’ match against the Tigers this weekend and, given how much trouble the Tigers are in, Parramatta has been installed as favourites.

However, do Parramatta deserve a player of Hayne’s calibre? Simply, no. Parramatta have had instability in the coaching and administration ranks since the end of 2006 when Brian Smith left.

In Hayne’s career he has been coached by five separate coaches and he has had to carry the team for the majority of his career.

Parramatta have been lucky to have Hayne, without him they wouldn’t have made the finals since 2007, let alone their grand final appearance in 2009.

Some Eels fans have been saying Parramatta should release Hayne and replace him with younger players as he’s chewing up too much of the cap.

That is a ludicrous idea as without Jarryd, Parramatta will remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the ladder. There is a noted difference in Parramatta’s on-field attitude when Hayne is on the field.

Hayne, like Hindmarsh before him, has papered over the ever increasing cracks in the Parramatta side. Sure the Eels still struggle when he’s on the field but they do threaten more when he plays.

In my opinion Hayne is in the same position Hindmarsh used to be in. His team relies on him too much.

At his best Hayne is the best fullback in the game and can tear any team to shreds but it is just not practical for him to perform at that high level week in, week out with the team he has supporting him.

The constant bickering off the field hasn’t helped. The board is divided but it seems that is slowly being resolved ever so slightly.

Ricky Stuart is doing everything he can at the moment to build a team for long term success and it seems he may be the club’s first long-term coach since Brian Smith.

But at the moment the club doesn’t deserve Hayne. Realistically, the Eels are blessed to have had Hayne at the club since he was a teenager.

However, in the end the Eels don’t deserve to have Hayne. He’s the hero the club needs but doesn’t deserve.

  • Hayne has chosen to stay at the club because it's the only club he knows and a club he loves. But in the amount of crap Parramatta has been through since his debut they club doesn't necessarily deserve his services. I'm not saying we should get rid of him, on the contrary I think we should be counting ourselves lucky we have such a talented player on our books.

  • I never said others didn't have different opinions. However to say he hasn't been the same since 2009 demonstrates some naivety on your part. That 2009 run was special and he won't repeat that. It's a once in a career thing. Now he spent half of last season on the sideline because, whilst still carrying a slight knee injury, he played for his club to try and drag them over the line resulting in a longer lay-off than if he had sat out that match. He tried continuously last season to play with injury but in the end it was deemed a better idea to let him recover. Now this season He got injured trying to back from State of Origin for his club in a must win game.

He has put his body on the line for his club and injuries are part and parcel of the game. Given what form he was in at the start of this season I'd say he was worth the money.

Given our recent treatment of coaches and constant instability of our administration I'd say Parramatta doesn't deserve Hayne but they're lucky they have him. I think you missed the point I was making.

  • Agree entirely. We will never see his like again at Parramatta and don`t deserve too. One can understand the disaster that the administration has been, and is, and will continue to be when the fans themselves are irrational, toxic, opinionated, loud mouthed and plain wrong. The directors are drawn from that ilk.  Their opposition to Jarryd Haynes derives , I believe, from some Psycho-pathetic Freudian hang- up that they have. Freud talked a lot about about envy. They are envious about JH  Money is often a point of contention with them, again a subject Freud explained in detail.

  • Wiz can I ask you this...if it wasn't for his "run" of spectacular games last year would Greg Inglis be on $1mill per season? And how long has Inglis been injured for this year and he hasn't played up to the level that he did last year, so why isn't he receiving as much persecution that Jarryd received the year after 2009? Almost every player has a string of fantastic games that will get them a big contract and then after that they won't seem as effective because the opposition gangs up on them. The reason other players can do it more consistently is because they have first grade quality players around them and that spreads out the defence whereas Parra for the past couple of years has only had 1 consistent dangerous player and in some other games someone else might stand up. Look at our top 13 this week and then ask yourself how many of those players would make the starting side anywhere else? The only one I can think of is Hayne, whilst it might be at centre/five-eighth/wing at other clubs he is the only one that could walk into any starting side

  • It doesn't really matter as I am informed that this will be Jarryds last contract with the eels, no matter how we go in the next few years.
Jarryd is desperately keen to try other sports, probably rugby.
It's not a question of money but of achieving in other disciplines.
  • I'm not inclined to be an agitator on this site but I must say that I don't see any real merit in this blog.
An opinion piece is fine. We all have an opinion. This one doesn't seem to be backed with any substance though.

Are we fortunate to have Jarryd? Absolutely.
Are we in a mess? Let's state the obvious.

I'm really looking forward to next year and beyond. We've recruited well and hopefully 2015 will see us continue to do so. Our squad will be much better and much more competitive.

After we start winning some games we can start talking about the footy again. The coach hating will disappear and we'll enjoy having a team that we can be proud of.
  • Way too much 'smack' has been spoken about Jarryd on this website of late. It is not deserved.

  • Every time Hayne's contract comes into question there's talk of him wanting to try other sports, yet he's never wanted to talk to anyone else but the Eels, if he really wanted to challenge himself he would have walked in 2007 when Souths offered him twice the money Parra did and that was when Souths were shit. I was the one who asked about Inglis Wiz, not Super. Hayne isn't an Origin must have? Funny that the only Origin game Hayne played NSW won, if he isn't an Origin must I don't know who is.

Yes Hayne might have had one amazing year but he's had better than most years after and previous. In his initial year Hayne scored something like 17 tries in 16 games and won Rookie of the Year the next year he was picked for City-Country, NSW and Australia at 19 fast forward to 2009 and even at the beginning of the year the only shining light for the Eels was Hayne where when playing 5/8 was still living up to his tag of "the best interceptor in the game" and then we all know what happened after that and this is the year he signed a contract for a reported $500k. The next year the rest of the team weren't as dynamic as they were in 2009 and it showed in Hayne's game as he wasn't as dominant in 2010 either except for a few spectacular performances in particular a game against Penrith where he won it almost single-handedly and whilst he wasn't as "spectacular" as he was in 2009 he still managed to come up with 28 try assists which was equal 1st with JT and Benji. In 2011 Hayne began the year injuring himself against Penrith in the last trial of the pre-season and then re-injures himself when trying to sprint 100m to score a try in his first game back, during this season he matches the most ever try-assists in a single game with 8. And we all know he spent most of the time on the sideline in 2012 and was clearly noticed as Parra finished last and in 2013 he's been sorely missed for the past 8 games with Parra winning none and averaging 1.5 tries per game and this highest we've scored is 2 in a match, his defence is also sorely missed with Parra conceding more and more points each week Hayne is out.

Furthermore amongst all of this Hayne has been the only constant stand-out for NSW with many saying that if it weren't for him NSW wouldn't have had any hope at all and we constantly hear Jarryd is the only player that QLD fears. Don't forget in all of this Hayne has produced some of the best CVR ratings ever and features 4 times in the top 15 whereas Inglis only features twice

    Greg Inglis CVR

  • All I hope is that Parra can at least be competitive next year or Hayne is gonski. Everyone talks about loyalty but if Hayne hasn't been a pretty loyal player over the last 5 years then I don't know who has.

  • Super what about the unspoken shite Hayne has brought to the club with his mate Timmy?

Why don't you ask Hindmarsh how divided the team became at the end of 09 because of the Osbourne's certain invitations to the dressing room pre game?

He is a great player, but has encouraged a considerable outside influence to be part of the CULTURE of the club over the past few years. I have absolutely no doubt that Hayne has had too much influence over the team culture and it remains a massive issue.

I'm sure you don't need me to spell out what I am talking about.
