Hayne, best fullback?

Just wanted to get everyones opinion on Hayne at fullback. I realise he is fantastic in attack, if not the best, but he has a lot to improve on if he wants to be the Australian fullback. I find his defence needs improving as does his positional play, and he really needs to communicate at lot better with the wingers, especially when opposition sides go to the air. Am i being a bit harsh as he only had half a year last year in that position?

  • Yep
  • Your probably not going to get the most objective answers on this site. But here goes my biased opinion.

He is the best 1 of the last 12 months... and probably the most dominant from that position since Lockyer (who played behind much better halves) as did Mini, Stewart and Slater.

He is not a better career fullback than Mini, Lockyer or Stewart at this stage, but should really overtake them all in due course.... especially if Stewart becomes a spectator from Silverwater.

He needs to define his role a little better. He still gets caught at first receiver with no plan in the red zone. As the halves develop he needs to play from 3rd receiver and course havoc on the edges (just as he did when he ran off locker to be help in the allstars match). He should be our permanent long range kicker in general play for sure....

His defence looks okay to me, but you can't really tell on tv if he's out of position.

If Inglis was playing fullback at the Storm he would be in front of Hayne unfortunately.
  • Great fullbacks, belcha , jack, slater, our paul taylor , burt , hodgson , hayne ,gidley - the list goes on Hayne did last year what slater failed to do , i still believe hayne is the current best fullback but i think slater is on his mind too much .

Also uts so early in the season , let hayne find his rythm . i am sure he is doing his homework every night like a good boy .

come march when he kicks into gear , everyone wont be saying oh no they will be seeing the hayne train on an express course to a premiership .
  • Agree with everything you said about Jarryd Hayne
    Well Put
  • Sorry guys I can't agree. Hayne will be a great fullback but at the moment I think Slater is ahead of him. Slater gives 100% every week were Hayne seems to be at times not at his best and at times lazy. Slater attacks the ball and returns it at speed and is always there in support. Hayne looks to trap the ball with his feet to much or gather the ball and amble to the defensive line instead of attacking. A player of his size and speed should be flat out when he hits the line, busting out of tackles and looking to offload. We all know he has the ability but he needs to do it week in, week out not just when the chips are down. He is a leader in our side and should show the way every time he touches the ball. If he played every game with the passion of Fui he would be unstoppable.
  • give me a break fui fui is not on the field for 80 mins
  • Nope not harsh at all i completley agree will be interesting to see if he can get those aspects of his game right
  • surley .. But I think that he learnt all his kicking skills when he played those games at 6.
  • i would not consider jarryd hayne a "great" fullback yet. He needs to show he play consistantly year in year out.. Billy slater is the best at the moment by a long shot and i know most parra ans would not agree with me on that. The try that inglis scored in the GF last year is still fresh in my mind..Hayne should have gone up for the ball.. Its all good being a brilliant attacker but we need our fullback to make defensive plays as well..Howwvwer with more experience, there is no reason why Hayne cannot be the best...
  • I agree with most of it! At times Hayne seems to focus a bit more on the fancy stuff and not the hard yards.

His one on one defence is pretty solid and his covering work is up there as well. He probably edges Slater out there, just, especially now that Slater can't use his feet!

At time his positional play under the high ball is pretty bad, he lets way too many bounce. Sometimes it looks to me as if he is just ambling across and will let somebody else get it. The one he let bounce in the GF is a perfect example of that. It was his ball and he didn't go for it and the result was a telling try. Sorry Slater has him there.

If he keeps developing his overall game, he will surpass Slater, but not this year I don't think. If he gets the NSW 1, and the Blues win (COUGH COUGH CHOKE...that was hard to say, I'm a QLD'er) the SOO, he probably will get it this year.
