So here it is folks, the conspiracy theories aside, the singling out of the clubs board, the persecution of our coach, the ideology of taking a stand. Those that guessed and those that straight up told porkies.
The truth the real truth " or is it, hahahahaha " finally comes to light on who knew what when. Its pretty self explanatory that it was Mattersons call from go to whoa, the thought " im over paying fines, the circumstances of losing the grandfinal , the time frames involved. Some here called exactly that, kudos to you. Some did not. Some including me spoke extensively on letting his mates down and the animosity his mates must be feeling. Dylan Brown sheds light on this and states we are making fun of him and we support him. If its good enough for Dylan "not sure about others in the team" then at the end of the day for the record I'm over it, and ready to move on. Will you ?
Here is the article.
Didn’t have a clear head’: Truth about Eels star’s bizarre ban call as ‘dirty’ Buzz hits out at NRL
Staff Writers from Fox Sports
Winless Parramatta receive a welcome boost with Ryan Matterson returning from suspension for Thursday night’s grand final rematch with Penrith — and new details around the star’s backrower controversial three-match have been revealed.
Matterson surprised many by opting to sit out the first three rounds of the season, instead of paying a $4000 fine for a crusher tackle on Dylan Edwards in last year’s competition decider.
The decision continues to be debated, and Matterson has copped plenty of flak for it, but veteran Daily Telegraph reporter Phil Rothfield on Monday voiced his support for the player.
Rothfield said Matterson “didn’t have a clear head” when he opted to take the suspension in the days after the grand final and criticised the NRL for not allowing him to change his decision soon after.
“He’s come under enormous criticism for electing not to pay the fine last year and miss the first three rounds of the competition. I’m pretty dirty about the circumstances of that,” Rothfield said on the Big Sports Breakfast.
Parramatta were given 48 hours after the grand final to make a decision on what he was going to do. Now, like all grand final teams, they get on the drink for two or three days and Ryan Matterson didn’t have a clear head when he said ‘bugger the NRL ... I’m sick of paying fines .. they can get stuffed. I’ll miss the first three games.
“Now, when he became clear on his senses, Parramatta immediately went to the NRL .. this was not long after the grand final and said, look he wants to change his mind and they wouldn’t let him.
Rothfield said the NRL’s firm stance would likely have been to avoid setting a precedent for players to change decisions but he stressed Matterson’s circumstances were unique.
“He had a pretty decent argument to be able to change his decision,” Rothfield said.
“He hadn’t had an opportunity to sit down with (chief executive) Jim Sarantinos or Brad Arthur. He’s been painted in a bad light and on face value it is poor that he’s chosen three games over $4500 but if he’d had his time again...”
Parramatta teammates haven’t missed the opporunity to poke fun at Matterson over the decision but teammate Dylan Brown told the Daily Telegraph there was no bad blood.
“Nah we obviously made fun of him but at the same time, no one knows what he was going through at the time when he made the decision so whatever the reason was, I’m sure it was valid for him and his family,” Brown said.
“We support him either way.
“Things would have been racing through his mind (after the grand final).
I’m pretty sure they rushed him into making a decision, which is something I personally don’t agree with.”
Matterson’s return is a huge boost given the Eels’ backrow stocks have been depleted due to the injury to Shaun Lane (jaw) and exits of Isaiah Papali’i (Wests Tigers) and Marata Niukore (Warriors).

Ridiculous notion that he had "been rushed" to make a decision. The decision is clear as day. Pay the fine. It's petulance to even consider sitting out the games.
How is it ridiculous you ask? I already explained that right after I wrote it. It shouldn't even be a question of what to do. Pay the fine.
I'm with you Brissy, this was explained last year that they were out when he got the call. It's unprofessional to be chasing players after a loss to suspend them for the following year. They could have waited & let the dust settle, it's typical of the Management, they shot ftom the hip & creat all sorts of problems. The thing is the players have dealt with it, it we that won't let it go.
Listen tim tin, Matterson said nothing about being rushed into the decision when interviewed weeks later and supported his own decision saying that he had bills to pay and was against the escalating fines.
Stop defending Matterson
It's not clear as day, 48 hrs after the GF ... Commiserating to boot - Shame on NRL for encroaching that soon, should of been a week.
What is there to think about? He's supposed to be a professional and committed to the team. Blaming the NRL for this is weak.
He made a rash decision that he pretty much regretted immediately. The NRL should have been more flexible. There was no reason not to be.
You've never made a rash decision that you regretted Acme ?
I'm not sure it was a rash decsion. As Chief mentions above, he was interviewed weeks later and doubled down.
Like I said from the start, NRL had no reason to ask for a answer straight away, Matterson wasn't playing in the World Cup, he'd just played in a losing GF drowning his sorrows and for some stupid reason they wanted a answer in 48hrs. Why could they wait for a answer in December or January? Btw I still blame the club for not being proactive.
Matterson does not drink alcohol so this article is Wasted.
