Impending shoulder surgery has once again put Richie Fa'aoso's career under the microscope. Having completed a successful comeback from a broken neck with the Eels, the prop injured his shoulder during the Tonga-Samoa Pacific Test in early May. He played on for another three weeks at Parramatta but the agony became too much following the loss to Souths in Round 13.Fa'aoso's season has been plagued by injury. Image: GettyFa'aoso hoped the injury might have settled over the past month, enabling him to return later this year. But he's now been told surgery is the only option, destroying what was supposed to be a fairytale comeback season. With no guarantees at Parramatta beyond this season, it remains to be seen whether the 31-year-old can yet again haul himself from the depths of physical despair. The NRL has decided to take a less drastic approach to speeding-up the game, opting for an eight-man interchange model from next season. While there's been calls for the number of bench rotations to be slashed from 10 to six, we can reveal concerns over a global disparity have convinced the NRL to be more conservative. The interchange is currently set at 12 for Test matches, and power brokers felt half that number would have created too wide a gulf between Australia and other league-playing nations.Josh Reynolds looks on from Canterbury's interchange bench. Image: GettyBut make no mistake - there was a strong push for six interchanges from the rules committee for 2016. While their wish won't be granted until 2017 at the earliest, the NRL is set to introduce more measures that are designed to speed-up the action and ensure the ball remains in play for longer. We're told they will be announced very soon.

  • make room for Pauli Pauli's extension. I've always liked Richie but who would you rather invest your money in? A 31 year old that is past his best or an up and coming 20 year old whose best football is ahead of him?

    • Bravo! Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • Changing the interchange to 8 won't speed up the game. We'll see more teams kick for penalty goals, and kick the ball out into touch so that their players can get more of a break. I also expect there'll be more wrestle now so that players can get their line-set with that extra second or two. There'll be a lot less football being played with this change, do not like it one bit. Another thing is we'll see the reduction of weight in prop forwards, instead of being able to carry 2 or 3 props between the 115-125kg range a lot of the props will be between a team may be only able to carry 1 and we'll see props becoming a lot smaller. I like the fact that we can have a player like Sam Kasiano, a 125kg monster, being tackled by Jake Granville who wouldn't be anymore than 90kgs. Another thing is player welfare, you have to use an interchange to bring them off and with only 8 now it'll be a lot harder to justify bringing them off for what could potentially be a damaging injury. What should have been done instead is put timers on scrums and goal-line drop outs.

On Fa'aoso it's a shame that he hasn't been able to be a regular starter in our team and hope he does well post-NRL career. Good on him for giving it another go.

    • I think the reason for the change is to keep players in the game at the other end of the scale to your monsters Ham. If fresh big men come on in a relentless procession, fatigue as a factor is taken out to an extent. As such we have seen teams getting bigger and bigger with no place left for the small quick blokes like Sandow.

Pearce as a half back plays at a bigger weight than his Dad used to as a lock. Steve Mortimer played half for NSW at 75kg. Pearce is 91kg. Look at modern day wingers compared to the quick whippets of the past.

You can tweak the rules to stop these slowing tactics that coaches will inevitably try. If fatigue doesn't come back in as a factor I think the leak of talent to AFL and soccer will increase as parents increasingly see the game as only for big kids and push their children in the direction of these sports which offer greater rewards for players that are smaller and more agile.

I was hoping they would reduce it more. Just my opinion though.

    •  The reason it will be eight and not six is because of the monsters in the Canterbury club. You know who is protecting the Dogs who have pulled the wrong string in having so many giants in their team. It stinks, but it is there for all to see. The same bloke is again bringing in means to speed up the game and have the ball more in play even when people like Bennett and Hasler etc are now complaining about the work load on the players and the injuries that that brings. I have said it before many times that a fast game is not a better game. It is the BS brought in by the failed Super League disaster. We have to stop bringing in new rules every year. Fans don`t know if it is Arthur or Martha.

  • know doubt richies a tough human , and a tough player of rugby league, but hes pushing him self to danger,he should retire, and maybe stay in a coaching roll at the eels or else where, good luck richie.

  • I did not go much on Richie anyway so no great lost

  • I’m with you, RL.

  • Health is more important so good on him though their were rumours out my way he was going to join the Appin Dogs and play in the Group 6 CRL comp. I hope he doesn't the comp has enough ex NRL players it's a joke. As for the reduced interchange why not leave it the same crack down on the shitty wrestling and get these refs to have some balls and blow penalties and use the sin bin.
    • That's it Mo. There're so many ways teams are slowing down the game atm and reducing the amount og football being played, instead the NRL should be encouraging to keep the ball in play or at least reducing the time its out of play.
