EA, as usual i ask, how did Funa-Iuta and Talagi go starting? I see Funa-Iuta played most if not all the game.
Also, is Shane-Tapau worth a consideration in future or just making numbers at the moment?
Funa Luta was probably our best player. He is developing really well. Works his ass off today in defence which is something many others didn't do today. But I will maintain this again, he will be a better middle than edge from what I have seen. Just lacks the line running and destructiveness to be a backrower of my liking.
Talagi is really building well in Flegg too. Would not surprise me if he skips SG ball next year and starts the season straight in Flegg like Tuivita did last year. Very surprised how good he is going. Imagine an 18 year old prop starting and handling himself against 21 year olds. At full strength he will drop back to the bench though.
Shane Tapau is only 19. I will reserve judgement till next year on him when he will get more game time in Flegg. Right now he is just filling in for injured players
I saw him for NSW Funa-Iuta and found his movement lacked and wasn't agile enough for the edge, missed a couple of tackles against more speedy runners. I can see him as a middle.
Talagi I think you're right about that he could just stay in Flegg starting and how it should be, if he is handling it just let him develop there, not much he will learn further in SG ball. Fact he went from 18th man to bench part player to now starting in only a few short weeks shows how talented and quick of a learner he is.
I think we could see Tuivaiti and Talagi front row hopefully in 2027.
Yep agree with eveyrhting you have said
I'm not up to date on our juniors as such, but the bottom line EA is with our overall structure, we should have a huge back up base of juniorplayers. It seems that other areas complimentary to ourselves pull them out of their arses.
This is one area we should not be crying poor in!
Many factors you got to consider. You are only looking at an age pool of players under 21. when you are filling 14 jersey Flegg teams (doesn't include the qld version of the comp too) there is not enough talent in that age pool to have high quality backups. It is not like NRL when you can debut a young player killing it in cup. No player stays to be a depth player in a junior team. They will leave to find a spot in another junior team so their dream can continue. So imagine having to rely on your 4th choice fullback and only one of your first choice players in 1-5. One of your centres Leigh wasn't even first choice centre in SG ball yet is in the Flegg team to show the length of injuries.
Second major thing is that Jersey Flegg obviously has a high development focus while they try to win the comp. So they blood young 18/19 year olds who have high potential over 21 year olds who may be better right now but very minimal potential for the future. So there has been a big influx of SG ball players in the team. Add the fact that the lineup is changing every week due to promotions, injuries, etc there is no cohesion or chance to create combinations in attack or defence. So most of these players have never played together before. SG ball and JF have their own preseason as well so it's not like they had that either to know and play with each other.
so yea lot to consider for this. Yes they should have done better especially some of the effort areas but got to keep things in perspective as well
I understand what you're saying, but is it not the same for all clubs? OR Have we just met the last few clubs when they have not been in our current position? (ie had their #1 side v our back up's back up's)
Getting flogged these last few weeks ain't great.
I will be honest I don't know much about the other clubs to comment about any possible availability issues. But I agree it still hasn't been good enough for a couple games. We won comfortably last week with a similar lineup.
Thanks for your valued input around these young players. Always appreciated mate.
I think you are touching the area issues EA but this should not be poor me issues. The reality that a number of junior players do go to other clubs because they look for opportunities that have passed them by at Parra.
II just find it hard to accept that our scouts do not have an understanding of who is out there potentially to be able to come up as a depth side.
i.e. we could have a country development squad, paid for by the club and actually develop a following in regions that are not well serviced.
Recently we holidayed on the NSW Coast, Pottsville area the size and RL development in that area is amazing and the Gold Coast Club cannot handle the embarrasment of riches it produces.
I am sure our guys are aware of opportunities, our club seems receptive to spending money on development, maybe they have to be a little more lateral in how they approach it.
It seems to me that a lot of our young talent has actually come from other clubs....Dyllan Brown was the last Test Player we produced....who before him....I suppose we can claim MM but producing superstars have not been happening....why is this so in a development area like ours? Penrith have a lot of their superstars coming from the bush!
