I disagree it's on Brown that he has a lack of support runners. Munster plays a very ad lib style where he bounces around and runs across field looking for a half gap. Difference is the team is well drilled to support him wherever he bobs up. I put it down to poor coaching and a lack of personnel generally capable of keeping up with Brown. Hopefully that changes this year
I am not disagreeing there Michael, Munster seems to get a free run in comparison that's for sure. Munster is a lot more rocks than diamonds IMO. Well at least within the past 2 seasons.
I am hoping like you, don't worry but I am really disappointed with his standoff role in this whole process. If he came out and explained his position, we probably would not be having all this discussion about his football ability.
Agree the support around DB is definitely an issue, with lane injured and playing in the middle would impact his effectiveness on the edge - the other issue is DB is priodmentaly a left sided player and great one at that, sharp left step and he will usually double up and catch a middle forward in quick sand - also, we can be critical of Penisini but the fact DB is not a right sided player, Penisini does cope some heat but his game suffers especially when Moses is out injured. I cant figure out why he doesn't play both sides of the field, can Jason and our new skills coach unlock that part of DB game? It will be interesting to observe, all that said DB development has stalled, for a 100 gamer he hasn't leveled up
Browns the half with the ball in hand , it's his job to communicate with his backrower and centres where he wants them and what lines to run.
Its Browns job to stay connected to his go to backrower and centre/winger.
Better talent outside him helps no doubt , but the half makes the backrower not the other way round.
As a half if blokes aren't doing what you require they don't stay in first grade.
With the amount of time Browns played top level football his improvements in the worse parts of his game have shown minimal improvement.
His kicking games improved more then his ability to manipulate defenders.
As I said he's a good footballer the only thing holding him back from being great is himself , the talents there just not the aptitude.
Absolutely Michael !
Spot on Michael. When DB makes a break (which he does quite often) it's the responsibility of our speed men to be there in support. That will change a LOT this year and I can see Parra scoring quite a few long-distance try's as a result. Iongi, Lomax and JAC will make a big difference in that area.
I think the biggest thing is the perceived lack of communication. Grand final run things clicked om DB's side with Lane finding form but also their way of knowing where the other would be.
maybe the last two years with the injury run the side has had its thrown it off and not had the opportunity to find that consistency but it doesnt does it excuse the silence or development to grow past those issues... I dunno. If he goes, any team will take time to gel...
best comparison I would make is DB is similar to Brandon Smith. Great when theyve got the right players sureounding them, but you dont know who is going show up on the day
Bup,
Respectfully disagree with you here, on parts.
Id argue Dylan created space for his outside men often last season, and also seems to have good communication with his second rowers.
His combination with Lane in 2022, but also with Tualigi last season who was running fantastic lines & decoys. Kelma seemed to know where to run, and when Dylan was running.
His communication is likely still a weakness, not arguing that.
But, I lost count of how many times DB created space & opportunities only to have absolutely no support inside or out.
For me, thats never excusable with ’no one knew what he was doing’. No one knew what Jarryd Hayne was doing either, and that was one of his biggest threats.
Dylan, Munster, Reece Walsh, Cody Walker, Luai, these guys are at their best when they move in & out of structures, looking for opportunities.
The difference with support isn’t their teammates knowing, its players remaining in motion, players on their toes, not their heels, not ball watching.
Players in motion around the ball carrier also creates more probability of a defensive error.
Luai is a good example, he’s very unstructured & doesn't telegraph where he is going, but guarantee Dylan Edwards will be lurking, and his outside backs / backrowers aren’t 20m behind ball watching.
The onus is on DB's teammates to be there in support Bup, they know his strength is running, it's a lack of focus, attention to detail or effort to not see one support player within a distance where defences even have to be mindful.
One huge criticism I have DB last season was him not berating his teammates for it, he was playing the general role, he was within his rights to demand more - Moses would have.
It all makes the contract issue all the more frustrating. In 2025, Dylan has experience & class surrounding him, this should be the year we see whats capable, but instead, he has this distraction for himself & the entire club.
Huge respect for you Bup, and just my 2cents.
No offence taken NOS but why are Browns outside men in first grade if they aren't hitting their marks.
Is the problem the player , the instruction , the application or the squad.
Ultimately the responsibility of any NRL team and its direction rests with its spine and its coaching coordinators as well as its list.
Accountability is the foundation of every successful club, there's always reasons for failure but that's not an excuse.
Bup, why Russell, Tago, Blaize Talagi (at centre) were all in first grade, at the same time, is a very good question.
A lack of support play, consistently, at this level has to speak to application, attention to detail, focus, effort, attitude, and coaching?
Accountability, 100%, which includes Dylan, Im with you.
He was the halfback, whether he should have been or not, and he (and Gutho) had a responsibility to drive standards.
The lack of support play was a real indication of the teams attitude last season, their mentality, imo.
It happened with Dylan 3-4 times just against the Tigers, the first game Moses missed, and was never rectified from there.
If that was Munster creating chances with no support, would Bellamy put the onus on Munsters communication? Or verbally rip the ears off his teammates for standing flat 20m away?
