Disclosure Day

What would you think if definitive proof of alien life emerged? Would it consign all religious thought to, as Mark Twain once predicted, the fate of a stuffed ornament in museums? How would suggestive confirmation of the principles of uniformity and plenitude - that if life can form on Earth it can form anywhere and thus will for everywhere - mix with confirmation of the principle of mediocrity (nothing special about humans)? Would mediocrity impact humans relation with technology and would plenitude turn science skyward?

        • Fake Midget, I agree that the US culture of just making shit up for clicks - digital grifting - is about one of the worst things that could happen if one actually wants to rationally discuss evidence of UFO's. Which of course does lead to the question of why, if these US sources are actually telling the truth, they would surround their claims with so many tell-tale markers of conspiracy thinking or digital grifting? Put differently, why torch their credibility? If they're rational, why behave irrationally?!

  • They're trying to push the alien narrative on us all. There is no little green aliens from other planets

    • Rocky from Hail Mary was carbon-based but not green (hard exoskeleton), and recently in For All Mankind (spoiler alert!) the aliens are methane based I think.

Little green men is the cultural archetype. Disclosure Day plays with this archetype theme, I think, via a plot element about how aliens appear to humans (will avoid that spoiler).

Interestingly, the Drake equation assumes ET will be like us, carbon and water based. What if we are flat wrong about that assumption? What would that do to the whole Goldilocks zone account of habitable planets?

      • Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Water seems to be the comon element's throughout the processes identified by the James Webb,  on this basis you would think that all life forms come from this mixture?

    • I agree there aren't any little green aliens.  The simpsons clearly told us aliens are big and green octopuses.  Thinking they will be similar looking to us is ridiculous.

  • It would be the height of human self importance to believe we are the only intelligent life in the universe.

This is the Fermi Paradox in a nutshell and has fascinated us as humans for hundreds of years.

Modern history of humans says The Great Filter is a strong contender... we're doing a very good job of almost destroying ourselves. Autonomous nuclear weapons already exist, we're one big red button away from deleting ourselves as a species. And remember who we've put in charge of those buttons.

Look at those running the world. Can you really see us existing for another thousand years at this pace, let alone million?

If other advanced societies are anything like us they probably wipe themselves out when they get too smart for their own good. Long before interstellar travel.

  • It's great to see since I've been on my holiday that that sites been able to evolve past people complaining about non footy blogs clogging up their feed .

    • Being an Eels supporter makes us all ponder the meaning of life. 😁

      • or that word could be "Meaningless" of life.....luckily we have a Moses in the team.

I love the smell of "napalm" in the morning!

  • Project blue beam anyone
