Cayless, who retires next week after a record 219 matches as captain, admits the Eels were never in the hunt this year.
"It's been a very tough season, very inconsistent and we've only got ourselves to blame for being in the situation that we're in," he said. "We just haven't competed for long enough periods in games. It's very frustrating and disappointing when you look at the players in our squad and the talent, but that's footy. You don't always get a fairytale."
Nathan Hindmarsh, who will captain the side next year, denied the Eels rested on the laurels from last year, but admitted the side needed an overhaul in playing style for next year.
"We just couldn't find the same spark we had last year. It's a bit hard to find. It was a bit of a fairytale end to last year without the grand final, obviously, but it's hard to replicate that," he said.
"There's a few games we lost this year because we didn't try and grind them away and we changed our game plan half-way, not because of the coach but we decided we'd like something different and we would change it.
"It's frustrating we weren't as consistent as we should have been.
"I think we might need to go back to the drawing board. We are going to work very hard in the off-season."

I imagine if we found the Eels drawing board it would still have the defensive plan for the 1986 Grand Final
But then alot of us will probably just be happy with the 'sack the coach, get someone else' approach to managing the team.

I find it interesting that theTEAM decides to change their tactics. Is that an indication that they don't agree with Ando's game plan?
