Canterbury hooker Reed Mahoney has agreed to a long-term deal to join the North Queensland Cowboys from next season.

Mahoney will see out the year at the Bulldogs before joining the Cowboys in 2026. The Bulldogs have agreed to release Mahoney from the final year of his contract after giving him permission to test the market a couple of months ago.

The Cowboys showed interest in Tallyn Da Silva and Broncos hooker Cory Paix. They have been in negotiations with Mahoney for a couple of months and this week landed his services.

    • Reckon that's a good point you making there Byron ...I think it would've been extremely touch and go. Sounds like dogs stuffed up a bit hehe

I'd like to think it's good timing Reed!

      • Well if that's the case we shouldn't have signed him hey . What the stuff are we talking about the dogs and Reed for .Anyway We got DaSiilva end of story and the Dogs didn't. Happy Days

  • I've got to ask. Why are the Bulldogs releasing Mahoney. He is one of their best each week, I'm confused. Is it solely Salary Cap in effect.

  • Reed is a cautionary tail for any young footballer that is willing to buy into Gould's promises. He was given the captaincy as an incentive to join the Dogs only to be stripped of it a year later when Crichton was given it ( more than likely promised it just as Reed was) and now is free to go a year before his contract ended.

Mahoney isn't the first player Gus has fallen in and out of love like this and he certainly won't be the last.

    Galvin should take note

  • Good move for both sides they've obviously been on this for awhile.

I feel ever since Mahoney has left Parra his development has stagnated and joining a rebuild at the Dogs hasn't helped his cause either,Captaincy isn't for everyone. In the end Reed made his own bed and hopefully his next chapter is better than his last.

    • They told him a couple of months ago he could look else  where and was reported that him a nd the cows were in discussions after their hooker signed with the Roosters  . Where else  was he going . Wasn't a surprise announcement to me

    • I've never seen him play better.

  • I know for a fact the dogs are spewing they missed out on Tallyn Da Silva.

    • If he wasnt released mid season , they would have tried very hard for next year. Have a feeling that's why richo released him early so dogs couldn't get him as they would have no cap or spots for this year

"The best footy fit for Galvin was always the eels, so he can develop with Iongi/Ryley smith and learn off Moses. Eels play an up tempo style of footy that suits him. Dogs is very slow and methodical complete opposite of Galvin game. Was never going…"

"Gus won't let anyone pull his leash, you have to get rid of him once he has set you up for success before he derails the success train.
If the dogs are as smart as you say they will finish him up at the end of this season,  the derailment has…"
