                  • I don’t think my view is narrow minded at all, I think it is just risk assessment within a salary cap.

I completely understand your point about not needing to follow conventional roster building and using spare cap outside the spine to strengthen other areas. Melbourne have done that for years. I also agree elite Centres and outside backs can absolutely change a team. Herbie is proof of that.

Where I disagree is paying close to a mil for someone who is not yet proven elite in that actual position.

Herbie at $1.2m? Expensive, but you are buying arguably the best Centre in the world in his prime who has already proven he can dominate games from Centre week in week out both offensively and defensively.

Burton at close to a mil to play Centre is different because you are paying projection rather than proven output. His entire market value has been built as a 6. His kicking game, touches, game management and involvement are what make him worth marquee money. At Centre he simply does not get the same involvement.

Could he become elite there? Absolutely. Could it end up genius recruitment? Definitely. But there is also a real chance you are paying premium spine money for a player in a position where he has not proven he can consistently be top tier over a full NRL season.

I also think the likelihood of Burton even coming to Parra specifically to play Centre is very low. The pattern throughout his career has been pretty obvious. He left Penrith to become a long term 6, and now as soon as uncertainty appears around his spine role at the Dogs, exit talk starts again. That doesn’t scream “player happy to permanently play Centre” to me.

If anything, I think if Burton leaves it will be because he wants clarity that he is a long term spine player somewhere. Especially when clubs like Perth could likely offer him both big money and a guaranteed 6 role full time.

                    That’s why I’d rather:

                    • pay huge money for a genuinely elite proven Centre like Herbie or Critta, or
                    • spend slightly less on a specialist Centre and strengthen multiple positions across the roster.

So I’m not saying it is impossible. I just think from both Burton’s perspective and cap management perspective, it is a much riskier move than you’re making it sound.

      • I think you guys have a problem with Renzo as our 5/8. He is not the type of 5/8 Parra needs, unless he can defend to a certain level it will not matter how "brilliant" he is. These brilliant young players look fantastic in Reserve Grade but the quality of defence will make it very hard for him unless he is equally as good a defender. Joash Pappi is an example of someone who may work?

I cannot think off the top of my head if there is a brilliant 5/8 in one of the top sides, Blaize Talagi is a good example, he has a brilliant all round half back on one side (Cleary is as good a defender as there is) and Casey Mclean on the outside of him...that said Talagi is the weak link in the Panthers defence, I cannot imagine Renzo being much different but if you guys can assure me he is good enough to stop middle forwards running at him, I will accept he can do the job. Parramatta has Moses, no where near the defender Cleary is and "god" knows who defending outside of him.

Current outstanding 5/8's are Deardon, Munster, Brooks (can now tackle), all these type of player's could nearly play lock.

I am disaapointed that you cannot see the difference, someone like a genuine 5/8 aka Burton would be an enormous plus for Parra's overall structure, obviously Brown filled this role the way I have explained the defensive requirement.

My final guess is for every try Renzo sets up and scores, he will be letting in an equal number defensively. People on here would be impressed when he scores a brilliant solo try, sounds like he is very good in attack....what's the other side of his game like?

        • Poppa I'm a fan of a Burton signing. What im saying is I don't think we are blocking Lorenzo's path if we are paying Burton right. I don't think centre would be an issue for Burton if Lorenzo becomes a must pick at some stage. He doesn't strike me as having a big ego. Don't discount Lorenzo though. Plenty of young halves have had defensive issues. Moses, Sam Walker, Hughes, Thurston, Lockyear.

    • Don't think he would need to recommend him. Ryles would have know all about him before chasing, if they are chasing. If anything, Ryles asked JAC his opinion of playing alongside Burto.

  • The only people we need to sign from the dogs are.

    1. Jack Underhill - what a beast of a player and so young. Will be a origin prop.

    2. Xerrie - is the most dangerous left side centre we could get for 2027, if he goes to market will be an excellent replacement for Russell.

    • How good was underhill sunshine coast boy. People on here say there are no players around Hahahaha. Xerri would be a good get. Burton is overpaid on performance.

      • He is honestly a great player already would be stoked to sign him

      • JR has already declined on the Xerri interest he did that a few months ago when the unrest at the Dogs first came about.

        • Which means his probably negotiating Hahahaha. Xerri went close to breaking the record for tackle bust last night.

  •

A Moses / Burton halves combination should work well. Burton for 2 or 3 years on a contract similar to or below the reported  $875,000 per season he is currently on.
