Bulldogs fans

At the risk of reopening a Pandora's box of malcontent, I want to add a brief commentary on the childish and disappointing mentality of Bulldogs fans. Thanks to the charmed run the Eels have enjoyed over the past two months, and now, their imminent Grand Final appointment, the media have run countless pieces on our players, administration and organisation - all in a very 'feel good' sort of way! I can appreciate this might rankle fans of other clubs, but it seems that only Bulldogs fans are unable to appreciate what the most heavily supported club in Sydney has achieved. Both before the prelim final, and most certainly after it, comments pages and blog sites at the Daily Telegraph and SMH sites have been awash with Dogs fans hating on us with a fervour seemingly only reserved to them. I note in the DT article about FuiFui's personal struggles, Saints fans (whose team agonisingly became the first Minor Premier to be bundled out of the finals in 'straight sets') are all cheering for us - a team that commenced their demise. Even Qlders found it in themselves to say positive things about the article. Not Dogs fans though! One such 'fan' wrote that he hoped Fui would get 'smashed' and the Storm would rout us on Sunday! Obviously this is one example, but I often browse 'The Kennel' (Dogs forum) and I've NEVER seen Eels fans infiltrating their site to bag their team (despite what Eels98 asserts), yet we have the likes of 'Tamara' come on here urging us to lose so she can call us chokers!!On the topic of choking - on which Dogs fans seem to think we have a mortgage - okay, we did bugger up the prelim final in 98, but what they never continue to tell us is that the very next week, the Broncos administered something akin to the unrequited penetration that only Coffs Harbour residents know of during a Bulldogs pre-season training camp!! That day, the Bulldogs suffered the second heaviest defeat (at the time) in Grand Final history! Furthermore, if losing a big match despite favouritism is the definition of choking, how, pray-tell did the Bulldogs lose on Friday night (after having only 6 matches all season)?? I don't know, maybe the choked! And now that they're out, why would they actively support an impromptu football team like the Storm over a neighbouring Sydney club?? Would any of us support the Storm over the Dogs if the situation was reversed?? A few might, but the majority would not! Both clubs are pillars of Sydney Rugby League. We both share not only geography, but an ethnically diverse fan base, quality junior development program, and engage in countless supportive community activities. Our beloved Eels are ambassadors on the field as well as off, our fans are well behaved, and we can count amongst our club legends, some of the most respected and admired figures the game has produced. So why the hate?? I'm not buying the argument often forwarded that their fan base is predominantly Lebanese because a substantial proportion of Eels fans, myself included, are of Middle Eastern descent. Yet this season, and in the past, when Dogs fans aren't defacing train carriages, intimidating opposition fans, or engaging in generalised public mischief, they content themselves on a feast of sour grapes! So I say to all Dogs fans, put aside the disappointment, forget the tribal posturing, and cheer on Parra - just for this week - for the sake of Rugby League in Sydney!

    • Brendan,
You are dan o's mate from the Bulldogs Debate Page. Now that is the premier dogs supporter site, not that crappy kennel site.
      • Yeah Dano and I work together, I ve hammering him all week. He was deeply depressed on monday, which I have taken deep joy and harmony from.

Even though i have great deep seeded hatred for the Bulldogs, I would of rather seen them win if they made it to the GF. Seeing Dano is a Queenslander I was surprised to see him go for the mexicans, which has spured myself to remind him who won last friday Haha.
      • Hey Staggering are you big Travs mate Jas
  • nice blog bourban man. i agree with your comments.
  • Bourban Man,
I must have missed the emails telling me to support the Storm because I would like to see the Eels win on Sunday. (just don't tell Tamara that I said that LOL).

The Dragons fans were happy to jump on the Eels bandwagon because Dogs fans had spent 2 weeks hammering them about being chokers. After you beat us on Friday night they just wanted to hammer us for losing.

Supporting teams and being tribal is what it is all about. The simple truth of why a lot of Dogs fans are going to support Melbourne is because they have lost bragging rights for this year and have quite rightly been hammered by Eels fans in their workplace and neighbourhood.

Regardless of whether you win or lose on Sunday it will be on for young and old next season. That is the beauty of rugby league.

P.S. I think Eels fans would rather burn in hell than support the Dogs even for a week LOL
    • There is always an exception to the rule Staggering, and you have been very measured in your remarks, so I don't include you in my criticism of Dogs fans. One of my best mates is a Dogs fan, and he refuses to speak to me at the moment!! Bear in mind, I used to share a house with him and a few other blokes - one of which was also a Dogs fan - in 2002 and when the NRL stripped the Dogs' points, I didn't give them any stick!

And do you want to know why?? Because they were hurting and I didn't feel the need to rub it in!

Now, I'm going to draw a long bow here, but, maybe that's why there is often crowd misbehaviour from Bulldogs fans - because they lack that empathy, and feel the need to have the last laugh (or last nasty as the case may be). The Eels are a proud institution, yet only have 4 premierships to show for it. One could call us underachievers as compared with the Dogs who have 8. I know I'm sounding like a bit of a socialist, and call me biased, but I don't know how anyone could begrudge Parramatta their success this season.

I appreciate RL is about tribal loyalties but where does one draw the line in the sand? Last Friday's game is over, and continued spleen is unnecessary.

P.S. I attended the Dogs final game in 2002 when they were stripped of their points. They smashed the Broncos and I, along with all the fans there that emotional night, gave the Dogs players a standing ovation so I can cool the fires of hell for the time being :-)
      • Bourbon Man,
You sound like a very reasonable person. I will tell you the biggest beef that Bulldogs fans have. It is being called rapists, terrorists, or criminals by ignorant opposition fans. I know that everything is meant to be fair in love and war but some people lose all integrity in attempts to piss off opposition fans.

I go to just about every dogs game during a season and I see a lot of eels games because I have previously had an association with the club and my mates are all Eels fans.

But I don't go there and stir the pot. I don't abuse other fans of other clubs (even though a lot of other Bulldogs fans do). But when I am minding my own business and some drunk fan gets right up in your face and calls you a rapist and a terrorist, how do you think many people are going to react? If I walked up to you in the street out of the blue and called you a farken paedophile how would you react? Personally I laugh at them and ask them if they feel better for saying it. This tends to upset them more as they don't get the reaction they want. Other fans don't take that approach and trouble starts.

But that doesn't apply in all situations and I can admit that some of the so called Dogs supporters have given the club a bad name in the past.

But rugby league becomes life or death for some people and they will back their club to the hilt and refuse to concede that another club is better or has been more successful. Because admitting that your team was beaten by a better team is to admit that you failed as well. No one wants to do that.

The way the Dogs and Eels have rebuilt themselves form last season to this season are not too disimilar. Both have had positive changes behind the scenes which have led to success on the field.
        • I completely agree with your comments. Personally, I found it very distasteful at that first game in 2002 when Parra and the Dogs met in Round 1 at ANZ Stadium, many Eels fans were singing out 'DNA, DNA, etc' when El Masri lined up shots at goal.

Any reasonably minded person would have known that the two Dogs players that would absolutely have played no role in the Coffs Harbour scandal were Steve Price and El Masri - two of the games' gentlemen and ornaments.

I understand the chagrin fans such as yourself would experience when some ignorant clown aligns you or other League fans with scum like the Skaf brothers or other such miscreants. Nonetheless, whilst I agree that some fans view their success of the footy team as life or death, I cannot accept it! It's a game FFS - a vehicle for public entertainment - much like music, art or theatre. As unacceptable as it is to racially taunt fans, or make the types of accusations you listed above, it is even less acceptable to engage in violence towards others.

Reported today was an incident involving Bulldogs fans towards former Eels prop Terry Leabeater and his wife. This cannot keep happening, as I'm sure you'd agree!
  • It's amazing how when they were running dead last in 2008, we didn't hear a peep out of them but when they're "succcessful", you can't shut them up!
