I think this is something that Finch came to terms with. When he left Parra, he said something along the lines of: "I joined the club, to play outside Tim Smith, not to be the main playmaker. That's probably not my go".
Now when you look at Finch, he has all the attributed to be a good number seven. He talks, he does all the little things right, kicks strategically well, and can throw a pass to put a man through a gap. But he's never been able to produce those plays consistently as a seven, because you just get less time and he always seems to be in two minds. Melbourne have used him perfectly because he doesn't have to make those on-the-run calls all the time.
I truly think Dan is exactly the same kind of player. He just will never be a player who can quickly sum up a situation and execute the play under pressure. Sometimes for the sake of your own career, you have to accept your limitations and work within in.
For me, that means him looking to play hooker. I can't see any reason why he wouldn't be absolutely fantastic in that position. It's just a matter of accepting that's where your skillset lies.
Actually, the player Dan Mortimer most reminds me of is Lincoln Withers, who I've always thought is an absolute gun number nine. He's still Celtic's best player most matches over in ESL.
