Brainstorming: What makes the Panthers so good?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thanks for your time and I hope you're all well.

I'm just curious to get your thoughts on what makes the Panthers so good?

Remember when it comes to brain-storming there are only "ideas" without judgements of good or bad.

PS: I'm thinking of producing a pretty extensive, long report on it so I'd love to hear your ideas. There has been some media vignettes on it with the Panthers' ten year plan and the "2015 Project" and how it all began back in 2011 with Cameron and Gus Gould arrival and the powerbrokers back them that wanted change after two decades of inconsistency and largely being also runs most years.  It could be argued the seeds of this dynasty that started back in 2009 with Matt Cameron having a chat with AFL development managers on creating successful systems. It could be argued it even started with Cameron's experiences when he was at the Eels and he admits his heavily influence from the likes of Brian Smith and our Pathways systems back then.

  • Immigration

    • Lol. Some scientists believe modern-man originated in Africa 300,000 years ago.

If so, maybe somewhere in our DNA there's a bit of an immigrant in all of us: except some Africans of course who remained loyal to their homeland.

      • I note there are a lot of white immigrants in the USA Funny how people see things differently

        • Yes, Barry makes a good point. Modern-day Australia was built on immigration, but I'm not sure all of Indigenous people are celebrating it. It's subjective as you say TAD.

  • Not sure , but  it's not throwing big money at players just to keep the team together. I saw a pic yesterday where it showed there was only about 4 players left from their first GF squad left. They've only got 3 players on decent coin.  And they wernt silly enough to keep 2 big dollar halves, as soon as Luai wanted a big pay rise  he was out. That's how they win, it's either smart contracts in the clubs favour , or the next big salary cap scandal.  It's very very similar to the Melbourne golden era , they kept shredding players to go under the radar , but managed to keep the important ones together long enough to build the culture and production line .

    • It's easy to take that approach when you have a production line of talent waiting in the wings. The eels need to dramatically improve the pathways,  there are signs lately that there had already been improvements in that area but we need to keep aiming higher.

      • That is true HFK. Good point.

The Panthers are very much about "building from the inside" as Cameron says, and it took them over ten years to get to 2020-24.

It wasn't all just luck of the draw imo.

    • Great point, Wiz. Matt Cameron would be nodding his head in agreement with a gentle smile.

In a recent podcast with Hayden Knowles, he admits he doesn't get too attached to players or sentimentality and is ready to shred 2 or so NRL players a year to leave.

Apparantly, he plans 3-5 years ahead constanlty every day. He was saying as soon as they win a grand final he is already thinking of three years from now.

  • Where to start HOE... 4 in recent years is a feat, 4 on the trot in this era is off the charts. There's a successful formula there for sure and I'd guess it's a combo of so many ingredients.

    • Structurally, club is in great shape, juniors / nursery / pathways whatever you want to call it. Massive pool... yes... but it has to be taken advantage of. We also have a large pool but they do it far better than us.
    • Footy smarts at the top - plenty for them, about zero for us.
    • As per Wiz above, we have big coin / long coin tied up in 2 'gun' halves... most clubs would seem to go for 1 with a solid 2nd... what we've done is ok but it leaves us potentially short elsewhere unless they both always play to reputation & salary.
    • Power from the back via wingers to start sets... self explanatory. Them lots, us not so much.
    • Speed through the backs... see above.
    • Aggression up front... also see above. Sad though in that we have had a much lauded forward pack - big names, some big coin but again, have they fired? Are they controlled aggressors? Not really.
    • Fitness... they seemed to be going almost as hard at the 70th minute as they were in the first 10. We're more like the opposite. There's a theme happening here.
    • Example of some of the above... Liam Martin... who is our equivalent? Every club needs one... we don't have one. He's a borderline psycho, unbreakable, massive motor and just goes so hard. Browny was probably our closest in recent years. Who's our Fish? Reg is probably closest. You can tell he came from there... probably our only forward you could say would fit in back there... the rest would not last 5 mins.
    • How often in the GF did they hunt in a pack and hit hard / drive back? then be back and ready to rip again. Constantly. How often do we? Rarely. 20y+ ago we did and we were brutal. Now we fluff, arm grab, slow wrestle, have 4 in a tackle and still let an offload go, take 5 mins to get up off the ground etc. Yeo links and distributes for them... like Plodlo does for us... but Yeo can go 80, Plodlo is gassed after 20.
    • Ivan doesn't strike me as someone who wants club / player crap played out in the media and the players seem to take notice... we've had too many examples of the oppposite occurring, which just de-stabilises things. Might be some 'BA's mates' legacy here. We've been held to ransom a bit... the most successful clubs refuse to be.
    • Foundation of hard, mistake free, even somewhat boring, hit up, kick to corners footy at times... but always with a sprinkle of flash and excitement as / when needed. Quite old Melbourne like. It's a formula... a style... what's ours?
    • Some tradesman like forwards that do a job and do it well (also Melbourne like) vs. us with some tradesman like forwards that failed TAFE... but work anyway.
    • Much more balance in their side... couple of stars but then a very nice solid tier that encompasses most of the team. We are more like an up down all over the shop graph - high, low, bit of everything... from Moses on song to absolute gronks that regularly cannot catch or tackle all in the one side... like we're hoping it will all average out but an inconsistent upper layer can't offset a consistently 'meh' lower layer.
    • Defined roles... they all seem to have them. We seem to have confusion. Is Lane an edge or a middle? Is Plodlo an off the back fence prop or an oversized half? Is Matto a starter or bench? Edge or Middle? Or do they all just change game by game? Again to mention Reg - he seems the only one clearly defined in our pack. So many others have an identity crisis... probably not their fault, also some legacy here.

I don't know HOE... probably a million other things...

    • Will 5150, excellent post. That was impressive and detailed; thanks for that.

What came to mind as I was reading it was a Matt Cameron mantra, "We refuse to coach effort."

That "effort" is not just about on field effort, and their fundamentals, but everything outside it. According to Cameron.

As such, they select character that is inherently, intrisically competitive - by nature - rather than needing external forces for motivation. No wonder they hunt in packs and never surrender. It's by nature, not by some external motivation.

      It's a non-negotable for them.

The other non-negotables are being a "source of Community Pride" (All Blacks-like pride of the nation on a smaller scale) and "good communication". They're big on storytelling too.

Cleary tells them, "If you're aren't communicating, you're not use to anyone."

It is the foundation of their systems, the trust and the confidence between them, as well as good decision-making skills.

There are so many onion layers to the Panthers. It fascinates me.

Sometimes, I wonder what motivates our players, If they need a coach to do it, or a big enough pay packet, or to cop a shellacking and huge loss or enough losses or security.
