Brad Arthur Interview

I didn't catch this on Thursday night, but after watching it on line I thought it was well worth posting.Of particular interest to me was Arthur's comments about speculation that he would walk out on the club. His response that it was never going to happen and that "no one ever heard me talk about it" was as up front as you can get. It's also worth noting his opening statement about the fans deserving better. Brad Arthur is passionate about our club. Seeing the club return to greatness is not just a job for him. Yes, it's his profession but being in charge of the club that he loves drives him that much more. Here's the link:http://www.9news.com.au/national/2015/11/11/21/54/foran-set-for-role-change-at-eels#plf4U371PE3Xyjw4.99

  • Didn't Hagan walk early?
  • Hages didn't finish his contract. He Due to health reasons with 1 year left.
  • This coming year is significant for a number of reasons:
    * it's the first Pre-season to be conducted at the new facility - last year was at Richie Benaud Oval and other venues for gym work etc
    * most of the playing staff have been signed on Arthur's direction
    * the coaching and support staff have been appointed under Arthur's leadership

    • To be fair though, how many coaches In the modern sporting era are lucky enough to see out their contract. Would have to be one of the most volatile job marks in the world.

      • Smith Assembled those teams, he also had a distinct lack of leaders at the club.  Anyone who was was pissed off or left because they couldn't cop him.   the Canterbury 4,Lyon,Hodgson,Andrew Ryan etc etc.   He liked followers(Caylo,Hindy,Burt,Wagon) which is the main reason he has never  won a thing.  Shame because tactically he is arguably the best coach of all time.  He would have 3,4 or 5 different game plans throughout a season and makes Kearney's approach to our side when he took over even more amateur.

        • Allan  Smith was without doubt a wonderful tactical coach, he had the tactics to beat all of the opposition, he also considered average players who played together with a common goal woud win premierships, he did not need the marquee players as we know it today.

He was able to coach at a level that really was higher than his abilities & had players wanting to play for him.but, he also had the special knack of both letting players go, & alienate others who had enough of him, & left.
A couple of times when he let the half time TV crews into the locker room, there was smith at his tactics blackboard, often with his back to the players & drawing lines across the board to show the team the 2nd half tactics.  Many had their heads down, trying to take it in, others looked mesmerised & a couple could be seen trying to avoid shaking their heads as they tried to take in the tactics.  Very much a far cry from the master himself in Jack Gibson who said RL is a simple game.

The sorrow in it all with Smith was that he was perhaps one of the best coaches never to have gained an NRL premiership, & some players I knew said his tactical games were often so similar & his insistence of following them to the tee lost so many of them, especially the half time algebra lessons as they were sometimes called.

What I see of BA so far is his getting alongside each player & giving them helps in their game styles, that I think is where a lot of the players are coming from, BA gets alonside them as individuals within the team & helps them, he is mentoring them in a personal way.

One thing I do not like though in what I see has crept into the game not just at the eels though is the wrestling & that was on show in the Week 2 video, at a time of reduced interchange, a lot of that wrestling has the potential to drain players much quicker & leaving the team weaker over the 80.

  • Easy to say, but what would others in his position do?

Who else was available, how would supporters react to losing Foz?

It's a business and you know it, you're worth what the market will pay and no one does the job for free. Some would say they want to be paid overs just to be involved in the club as the job, politics and expectations are ridiculous.

We make assumptions but sometime what it looks like from the outside is nothing like how it goes down.

    But you knew that...
  • From memory was one of the lowest paid coaches in the NRL, can't blame him or his management getting him a better deal.  But as you say Fong getting one over sharp is hardly anything to brag about.

  • Fong, your opinions carry a bit of weight on this site. That comes from always speaking your mind. If I can add my thoughts here, the one thing that BA is not guilty of is being a politician. He's not one for spin. He doesn't dance around with words when he talks to the players or the club executive. They know where his passion lies, but they also know that they shouldn't mistake his passion for a willingness to accept anything less than their full support. The essential component now, from my perspective, is coaching stability, especially so with a bloke that the players respect and a bloke that is passionate about Parramatta.
If he's asked for a comment he'll give it. He just doesn't go running to the press to give his opinions. If I remember correctly, he was interviewed by the grill team on Triple M last year and Matt Johns said a throwaway line to him about him deserving better than Parramatta. This was meant to be the concluding comment but BA pulled him up on it and said that he was a Parra boy through and through. I can't recall too many of our past coaches, and this is not a criticism of them, speaking so passionately.
  • The masses talk about Foz being our most important signing in decades ... he is not. It is Brad Arthur. The only reason Foz is at our club is Brad Arthur. Blokes want to play for him.

In his first year he lifted a weak playing group shackled by a "death by PowerPoint" Ricky Stuart culture from last almost into the 8. In year 2 he lost his marquee player just before pre season and suffered a horrific injury run and we were still in a position to win all but 4 games. In this coming 3rd year 50% of our spine is new plus Normie will be in a new jumper so it will take some time to settle.
We need Sharpie and our Board to back him to the hilt, especially if we get off to a bad start this year. He is our saviour, good times are ahead.
