I'm not saying we haven't, I just can't think of any truly great signings who have played a major part. A part form Smith, Dymock, Pay and McCracken back in 1996(!)
I know we have signed some good player who have failed to deliver.
Why can't we get it right?

Mckinnon, Piggy, Buetner, Wagon, Raper, John Simon etc etc....
There are heaps that represent good value for money buys.
I do get your point... you are trying to say our recruitment policy sux. I think our halfback policy sux more than anything. We have done well enough is most areas and won 2 minor premierships and made a stack of finals this decade... we just didn;t have a superstar at the right time to finish things off.
I have written off 2011... but I am very happy that for once, the club is chasing a top notch halfback... the club has elected to go backwards before it goes forwards... now whether that was design or bad managament, time will tell, but I do beleive we are in a position of stregnth long term... potentially.
Rather than build a team to compensate for lack of a superstar half/hooker, we are in a position to build a team around a good half when we find one. This is a different scenario to anything from the BS or post BS era
I'll say Mick Cronin is the best big name signing the Eels have made. Eels chased him hard in his days at Gerringong. Offerred to fly him to training in helicopter. He declined and commuted for the 10 years he was at the club.
Ken Thornett number 2.
You could argue Sterlo but he was just a kid when signed
The team has been a real force in the comp since the big four from the Dogs, those guys just planted some really great attitude seeds in what are now our senior guys, who continue to impress. We have had some 'forgettable' years since they came, but we have pretty much always been either in the eight or a good chance of making the eight since they came.
If you take out a few heartbreaking games in the finals series since then, us as Eels suppiorters have had it pretty good in the last decade, we definatly havnt been the Sharks or the Bunnies.
The best Eels recruitment was undoubtedly the players we brought in for 2005. They turned an average performing team into a side that should have won the competition. Primarily Morrison, Riddell, Tahu. It coincided with some of our young guns coming through and transformed the side.
It's not out of the question that a similar thing could happen next year. Webb, Maitua, Walker could all find new leases of life under Kearney and if we hadn't to get a Pat O'Hanlon, Jacob Loko and maybe Brad Murray (if he doesn't get wiped out) all have spectacular seasons, we could surprise because like in 2004 there was nucleus of good players but they were just missing a few class players to meld them into a winning unit.
Why does everyone keep raving about Maitua when he won't even be available for nearly half the year and will need to play well to keep Horo out of the team. I believe this is the biggest signing mistake in the last 10 years (but I hope I'm wrong). If we're relying on players to find a New lease on life then we are in bigger trouble than I thought (and I'm already totally depressed about our prospects from a realistic point but will try to be more positive when the season is under way)
The inexperience of our young side is obvious, but the boys are having a crack and there's plenty of effort being shown. Yes, we are making stupid mistakes and losing games. Overall though, I reckon we're looking more promising than we have in a…
"Good call Frank. Our players actually played hard and tried hard and just get dudded numerous times.
Moses and Moretti back next week will help. Take Samrani off the bench."
