All the Way

Hey Guys

Im just wondering what most guys thought on how we should play this year

Do we play a "win at all costs" style of footy or "conservative as long as we play good footy" (win or lose) style.

many are tipping us as the team to take the title this year but as we all know, weve been here before (tipped to be a top 4 side) only

to take the spoon home come seasons end.

I personally aint thinking title just yet, ill wait till near seasons end and judge on how weve played thru out the year.

Hopefully we play good strong no giving up style of footy, come september Parras name is finally on that trophy!!

good luck to the boys this year, GO PARRA!!!

  • Hi Darren, to win the comp we need to play a very expansive style of footy so we use our weapons on the wing to full advantage.

Brads shown in the past that when his sides play a predictable footy we are easy beats.

We need offloads, second and third phase play, moving the ball around from one side of the park to the other and switching it back inside, we need to play to our strengths out back which is our wingers.

Good kicking games from our halves and Mitch needs to step up and be an alpha and confident against the best.

Hopefully joeys input will inject confidence into the guys he's working with.

Forwards need to be high energy and creative but disciplined, we need to start and finish games with intensity.

To win we will need to be entertainers but have the ability to grind games out if needed.

If we play predictable footy it wont cut it in the big ones that matter.

We also need a real good vibe and belief in the playing group, to win a comp lots of thigs need to come together.

    • I agree Snake. Last year when we threw the ball from one side to the other switching directions and passing long balls we racked up big scores (eg. Broncos final and last game against Dragons). We look much better when we play like this and with confidence

      • Good blog Darren. Well said Snake, spot on. Agree TAD, nice touch.

Playing unpredictable, electrifying, expansive footy, with second-phase play, that we are capable of, will take us further - if we are tougher.

To address that soft underbelly culture, that kept resurfacing last year.

Too true, Darren. And all the talent and style in the world won't be enough if the mental & physical toughness is missing - it'll undermine belief and confidence - then our style. It goes hand in hand. Both style & substance.

  • Agree Snake except when we play at night with the footy getting wet, We have to be able to adjust quickly and at times change it up to play a grinding game. Thats been a downfall of ours for the last few years, we play a fantatsic expansive game mid afternoon on a dry deck and blow the team away the following week a late night start with the mositure/ due etc drop the ball, hang our heads continue to playt like we did in the dry and forget to change our style. Hopefully we are smarter this year in those types of games as well.

Actually just read one of your last points. spot on.....

  • I'd love to see us pissing off those boring block plays.

  • We need another string to our bow.
Yes an expansive style is our go to. We're good at it and can blow teams away.
But when conditions don't suit, ie slippery night games, up against a dour opposition we need to be able to play tough, mistake free, defence focused footy and rely on winning it in the last ten minutes. That's how you beat the Storm, Roosters etc. We need to show we can play like that as well if we are to be genuine contenders.

  • I think Joey's input is to help our attack in knowing how to create numbers out wide as well as knowing when to get the ball wide quickly as we just didn't do that last year yet Sivo still topped the try scorer list

Joey was great at leading the team up the middle only to spread it once the defence compressed and then reverse it with continued play side to side to then switch it up and strike in the middle once the defence spread out.  In his return to origin it was the best display of manipulating the defence I have seen and was a regular feature of his game toying with defences.  With Joey teaching Moses to read the defence and to run straight more often before passing, instead of running cross field I can see a better attacking side this year.

Defences are smarter now but with 2 great ball running 2rowers who can hit holes and offload, it will free space out wide for our centres and wingers.  Especially if Moses and Dylan Brown start running to the line more often. Brown runs direct already but Moses likes to crab across field.

I think joey working with Moses will see Fergo as top tryscorer as I feel it is a stronger edge than our left particularly with addition of Matterson.  Also  Waqa Blake has had time to develop a combo with Fergo on the wing if he can stay fit and on the field.  Maiko has more raw power and talent but as defences try to rush up on him to stop his time, Brown will choose the short ball to lane too often as he did last year, as it is usually the right play to go short if defences rush up on the outside.  Hopefully Jennings and Sivo come infield more often this year or switch positions at times so we can unlock Sivo's potential but I see our right edge as our major weapon.  With Moses speed, Matto's offloads and passing ability similar to Wade Graham and 2 big strong outside backs it will be a massive ask for any defences to hold that edge out consistently

    • Good analysis FM. The one that I am looking for this year is Matterson running off a Moses short ball close to the line.

The right edge will be lethal this season and dominate our attack

        • I am hoping you are wrong to Poppa. However there is one on a highlights package showing at the moment where he chases a short kick down and scores for the Tigers

When at the Roosters he did it a number of times. But most of all it is a favourite play of MM. He did it a number of times with Will Smith. He also tried it with Manu but his hands were not great.

Matterson is a different player. He has good hands and has the ability to run or offload.

I hope for both our sakes I am right and you are wrong
