Ray Price Heart and Soul

Those of us old enough to have lived through the glory days of the 80's had the privilege of watching a host of eels stars like Sterling, Kenny, Cronin, Ella, Grothe and of course Price. We all remember Sterling and Kenny as the brilliance, Cronin, Ella and Grothe as the skilled, powerful and or speedy backline hero's but when it comes to Pricey, me personally, I remember him as the tough warrior who never gave an inch and put his body on the line each and every week. Recently I have been watching a few games from the glory days of the eels on youtube and it struck me how I had forgotten just how good a player price was in both attack and defence. He made so many crucial line breaks and came up with big plays when they were really needed. Without a doubt Price was the heart and soul of the eels and we probably never would have won a comp without him.

If you get the chance get on youtube and watch a few games from the 80's, if you are too young to have witnessed the 80's, or like me, have just plain forgotten how good Price was it will be a real eye opener.

  • RP is without doubt the greatest eel ever.

Played most his games with concussion and never gave an inch. A true inspirational captain and there is no better example of a player putting his body on the line.

If 13 separate punches were to be thrown one each at a Parra player, he'd get in the way to cop 13 of them. Sterlo was very lucky to have someone like Pricey minding his back

He was great in the 80's but I think the 70's when he's just joined from Union with the long hair and headband he was a sight to watch said the oldies. I've seen a couple clips and I have to say he was an awesome player with the ball in his hands. As quick as an outside back. Definately the fastest forward from 1975-80.

Just check from the 2:55 minute mark Pricey outsprinting Chris Anderson who was a winger.

If I was to go to war, I'd like to have Steve Waugh on one side of me and Ray Price on the other.

    • Watched it from the start, great footage.

    • Great stuff.

  • Ray was a special one that's for sure

Never got to see him play wasn't my generation, but his legend and mythos certainly lives on, Parramatta immortal.

I heard they called him "Mr Perpetual Motion" . I can only imagine what it would be like to play against someone like that but it would not be fun.

I think if this Eels squad of 2018 can learn from this legend its that the game goes for 80 minutes, not 26 like last week.

    • Watch the first 4 or 5 mins of the video Parra fan on the hill posted above, there is enough footage in that to give you a good example of what he was like.

  • Which is why it baffled me how he was so quick to put his feud with Fitzy before the well being of the club .

Gteat player - bit of a dickhead .

    • Perhaps because Fitzy was a major problem that needed to be eradicated and Price wanted him out for the benefit of the club. Not a D-Head just extremely passionate!

    • Baffled. Severely tarnished his legacy. Screwed us royally just to get Fitzgerald.
  • Definitely the best of the Eels greats!

  • We don't have a Peter Wynn. Never mind Pricey.

Wynny was also very under-rated for his service to Parra. Should always be mentioned to the other greats. Paul Mares coulda and shoulda been there too. Great ball skills and kicking ability too. Made Parra better when he played.
