Need for clarity around HIA

Watching the Broncos last week and seeing Corey Oats get smashed and pretty much knocked out cold. I thought to myself while he was being strechered off that he probably wont be back next week. Yet here he is, named for tonights match. Tepai missed our game last week because of HIA the week before, and i dont even recall him being hit in the head during the game. So are the Broncos putting Oats at danger by playing him? What needs to be done around HIA to be policed properly across all teams. The need for independant doctors from the nrl and not the clubs i think is parramount

  • It is quite simple. You pass the test and you are fit to play. The more head knocks you have suffered, the longer it takes to come back from the next one.
  • I was gobsmacked that Alvaro failed it, and I agree with you, the NRL should appoint independent specialists at every club. There is no way Oates should be playing tonigjt
  • Considering in boxing and mma if you suffer concussion you can be medically suspended from even sparring for a month or more, I would say if fail test 1 week off should be compulsory. I think NFL also have automatic suspension periods but not sure of length.
If you are out cold like Oates was, to play next week is reckless especially considering how long he was down for.
Players and clubs will complain but if Oates has trouble down road can sue nrl and broncos. Even if passed test it is clear nrl is behind all other sports and guidelines not sufficient.
If Oates get another concussion tonight it a very bad look for nrl.
    • fake midget : Agree 100% with all that you say. One thing needs to be made clear though, the decision to play Oats tonight is the club`s decision and the club`s alone--- not the doctor, not the specialist, not any medical staff, not Oats himself but the Broncos club alone, which in this case is the coach Bennett . He has been on TV complaining of the critics over Oats playing. Bennett said Oats has been cleared by the doctor and Oats wants to play, he has been training well etc. Bennett is making excuses before the game in case Oats is head injured tonight. You touch on a very good point. the NRL ought to have the ultimate power to say if Oats plays or not. Coaches, like Bennett, will always want the win above the health of the player. As you hint at, the NRLis lagging badly behind other sports. Perhaps the Government should step in here? The players union is silent on this issue which is more important than the money they are seeking---someone should put a rocket up them! It could be done today it is not too late.

    • JJ, you said the clubs medicos cleared him. Thats the issue. Who pays them? The club is the ultimate decider. Until the NRL takes control and appoints its own medicos independent of clubs, certain clubs will flaunt the rules.
  • HIA is a joke the way its being treated; i have done the course for work / sport and the fellow who ran the course showed various clips in all sports of players being concussed/ or showing signs and then being allowed to stay on field.

The NRL carry on more about being 'inclusive' etc promoting many things that have nothing to do with the game and do little about this issue. I just question what will happen in 10 or so years if Oates comes back to sue as others are looking at now. I know he obviously wants to play but the rule has to be a mandatory 2 wk break. Soccer / AFL / Union and League all have different rules on this one.

  • Disagree Robert - MEDICAL staff make the decision if a player is capable of playing after concussion, based on their medical assessment and the history of said player.

It is supposedly a pretty strict testing procedure.

To some extent a player could fake parts of the test as they already know what answers they are supposed to give.

Eg. No blurred vision, no headaches and that sort of thing.

Other injuries most likely come under what you have said - leg, ribs etc - needle them up and let them go for it.

Look at Winterstein at the Cows with his hammy - could hardly walk in a couple of games but still played.

Now there was a case for a law suit if he suffered career ending injury imo.

    • Sir Col, that is right but as i have learnt symptoms can take a few days or so to show. I think all players should be rested for 2 wks; this then takes the decision away from clubs / and club affiliated doctors.

      • No argument from me on that Mitchy.

Was simply pointing out to Robert the decision does not lie with the club but medical experts.

Back in the days of the dinosaurs I had a couple of really good concussions but played the entire game with NO memory of ever being there.

Funniest one was when I rocked up to the field (with dirty gear and wondering why it was not clean) on Monday morning. Completely confused and thinking I had gone to the wrong field I spied a ground keeper who pyssed himself laughing at my dilemma as he told me I played the day before. Funny in one aspect but bloody scary in another.
