Apparently in Finals footy the rule still exists that when scores are tied at Full-time, you should play another 10 minutes each way (20min extra time) then if still tied up,,,, Golden Point comes into play.

Would of been interesting if someone from the Manly knew this and sent the Trainer out there with a copy of the rules to show the refs.

In what appears to be an anomaly in the NRL operations manual, two sets of rules exist over whether finals matches drawn at full-time should be played over 20 minutes of extra time or golden point.

The Sea Eagles lost Saturday night’s match to Canterbury in golden point through Trent Hodkinson’s 84th-minute field goal.

One section of the NRL guidelines discussed finals extra time.

It states under a headline of ‘FINALS EXTRA TIME (NRL COMPETITION ONLY)’: “For all finals games, including the grand final, in the event of a draw at full-time, extra time of ten minutes each way will be played.

“If the scores are still level at the expiration of extra time, the coin will be tossed with the winner of the toss electing the end of the ground to defend and play will continue until the next score (golden point).

“That score will determine the winner.”

Extra time as per Section 6 of the NRL operations manual.

Elsewhere though in the manual, a rule states: “If scores are equal at the conclusion of normal time in any finals series match or State of Origin match then, in such matches, including the NRL/NYC grand final, a period of extra time shall follow whereby the first scorer of any point or points (eg field goal, penalty goal or try) will immediately be declared the winner.”

Both rules are for 2014.

Also in the manual, extra time described as per the Golden Point rule.

The NRL stated on Monday night the golden point rule was correct and that Canterbury won fairly. It is unknown why the ‘ten minutes extra time rule’ remains in the manual.

NRL officials say that rule was there for all matches governed by the NRL — from juniors to the international game — but there was a second sub-rule section for NRL matches.

Manly officials weren’t blowing up, claiming they were aware the game would be golden point if scores were level at full-time.

An NRL spokesman said the rule book clearly states on the cover that there are separate notes and interpretations on the laws for the 2014 NRL Telstra Premiership.

“Those notes make it clear that golden point applies for NRL matches,” the spokesman said.

Some Manly fans though were filthy on social media.

Mario Recuero wrote on Facebook: “Why aren’t we challenging! The governing body does not know its own rules.”

Asha Williams posted: “Someone put together a petition with this info and my signature will be one of the first on there!”

And Darren Broadbent added: “Therefore it shouldn’t be golden point extra time. But a total of 20 minutes.”

Others fans claimed Manly supporters could try and find “fine print” but it wouldn’t change the result.

Defeat last Saturday ended Manly’s season and pushed Canterbury into a grand final qualifier this weekend against Penrith.

  • The ref should of know that they should be sack and fined big time

    • The refs have no idea Paul. It's getting to be absolutely pathetic.
  • I still can't believe turd Greenberg said he's not changing the 6 more tackle rule when ball hits the ref " coz the rule has been around for a long time". Wtf is this guy doing. I reckon if do a collection of $1 from every league fan who wants him to retire, we would raise a lot of money.
  • Golden point, or at least golden try makes more sense because 20 mins extra time is bound to take its toll the following week.

    • And the winners take a golden shower...

  • I can't really blame the on field refs.

The editor of the rule book is the one that should be under scrutiny.

Both rules are in the rule book there for both rules apply.

The ref wasn't wrong but he wasn't right.

  • Greenturd is all talk and no substance. He will be the death of NRL.
