Who can explain to me the ins and outs of player payments?

There have been blogs about "culture" at the Eels.I think the reason that Eels players are happy to coast,is because their pay-cheques are guaranteed, win or loose.Unlike the "good old days" when players had to have a real job, what incentive do players have to strive for excellence?

Is anyone familiar with how player's pay is structured?

It seems to me there is too much carrot and no stick. If a player is performing poorly he gets dropped to a lower grade.I assume his weekly pay is still going to be the same.Correct me if I'm wrong, but imagine if that applied to people's real jobs. You stuff up and for punishment, you have to work half the hours at lighter duties, but you still get the same pay.

Talk about being flogged with a feather. There should be some form of pecuniary punishment for slacking off,,and financial incentive for exemplary performance .

As it is,players only seem to bust their arses when it's contract time.Once their contract is signed, most of them cruise and don't seem to give a rat's arse if they lose.

Am I being too harsh? Thoughts.

  • Every club structures their pay the same way. The only players that would structure their pay based on how many first grade games they get is NYC players or NSW cup players who may get a few games.

You can't compare League to your average job, imagine if in your job if you stuffed up and a bunch of people that you'd never met, let alone know exist, argue amongst themselves about your performance on the internet?

    • Poor diddums, they have to deal with the pressure of internet scrutiny. However do they manage? My performance at my profession hinges on my work quality.Shit quality,no orders ,no pay.Fancy expecting these overpaid  doofuses to actually be accountable.Whatever was I thinking? Most of these blokes would struggle to land a job flipping burgers. You'd think, having a dream job, huge pay and all the fan's expect is 100% effort every game.Sorry to overload the poor dears.

  • No player is going to make the premier level of their chosen sport without being incredibly disciplined, success-orientated and competitive. Those traits don't disappear just because you have a contract.
  • Money changes everything and everyone
  • Money goes IN his bank account, wife takes it OUT.

  • I agree
No one should be paid over $200k unless we make the finals
  • Every team gets paid the same way (as in no win loss bonuses) . How do you explain other teams good culture? Or do you think only parra should have win / loss bonuses in their contracts. This would cause two significant problems: 1) no player would sign for us because they could get guaranteed money from any other club
    2) if we had a good season and finished top 4 we would blow out the salary club

We are not living in the 70s and not playing park football. Your suggestion is rubbish
    • My suggestion is directed at all teams aveel, how thick are you?I'm thinking more along the lines of holding their payments back till the end of the year. They can't afford the new car payments monthly if they are playing shit.Maybe a third of their salary is paid weekly, the remainder paid or with-held according to performance. If you play to the standard you are being paid for, there is no skin off your nose.If you start to bludge, then there is a means of getting a kick in the pants to pull your socks up.As for other teams playing well, that is precisely my point. Why do some teams always put in,while others are softies who fold under pressure?
