Where can the Eels improve?

A check of the stats reveal Parra's defence keeled 180 points less than 2013. Defence cost us a finals berth. We need to be better in that area. We need to be better by another 180 points. So with talk about who we should consider for improving our roster, will the Eels buy a few good defensive readers of the game? Worth a thought.

  • I was always worried about the day Hindmarsh would retire. The defence was ordinary in Hindy's last two years, but Parra have been diabolical in defence since his retirement.

    • No one stepped up to cover his 50+ tackles a game.

  • pretty sure you can get an app for that.

  • Tepai I believe will help. We went pound for pound with Souths for the 65min he was on. When he went off we cracked. Peats will also add a lot. His line speed and ability to stop a prop dead is something we haven't had for years.
  • More importantly, no one picked up his cover defence load. Hindy patched over a lot of cracks in the middle of the field. Gower does a lot of that work but because he doesn't play 80 minutes we still crack a lot in the middle.
    • Super..... Please can you please stop referring to holes and cracks you sick kent, this is a footy forum not you own private sex forum.

    • Yeah Super please sheeesh!!

    • If anything there was more crack when Hindy was playing.

  • IMO the last thing you want to do is turn Tepai into another Nathan Hindmarsh! Ultimatley Hindmarsh's defence was his and the clubs undoing they all knew he would make the last ditched effort tackle, they relied on him they used him, the club failed him by not surrounding him with player of a similar work ethics in defence,to have a player make 50 tackles In a match is sad and tells me the club has a serious problem balancing the work load around players!
    • Hindmarsh in his early days was an attack weapon - then Brian Smith made him a defender.

Interestingly enough it was not long after that, that Hindy could not get a SOO or Roo's jersey.

Moeroa is currently balancing both roles - let him keep going as he is.

To start we need a defensive coach - don't know who we got atm but he has proven to be as useful as tits on a bull.

Then we need a Coach to actually COACH defence against particular players and other team's game plans.

I don't think most of our players have ever taken part in a vid session to study other players and game plans when you see how easily they can be stepped.

Anticipation is a great tool, and you can only develop that if you study what the opposition do for the majority of the time.

After that it is knowing what to watch for - body angle, placement of feet, how a player is holding the ball, etc.

"I think you need to re-look at the start of the game; Brisbane had the majority of the ball in the first 20 min let alone first half, and when we got a shot at them, we scored. The game was one of the fastest I have seen and we did well to hang in…"
