Besides the obvious of performing well on a consistent basis and money what other things should our club be doing to attract the right calibre of player it needs.

Many clubs attract players for reasons other than money. So what should our club be doing to attract a player in demand to choose us over another club, other than money.

Some of my suggestions are (some our club may already be doing):

  • Create a family oriented club, picnics, BBQs, Christmas party for kids, etc
  • End of season or mid season get togethers involving family members
  • Job opportunities after footy career ends
  • Education grants
  • Courses to assist players with their future career (public speaking, etc)

This is only a short list that has taken me a few minutes to think of, so what are your suggestions.

Merry Christmas to all.

  • you said it all

  • Few off the top of my head,

    Real estate 'assistance'

Move untraceable cash from the poker machines in the club directly to players or 3rd party representing them, like we used to do so well.

Offer players partners 'jobs' all be it token

Education for anybody who wants it

Offer a place to stay for any new comer

    Continue building better training facilities

Make sure all players are fed and fed well by the club while on any duties at the club

Offer personal 'life coaches' for all young players

    Job opportunities after footy

Rig the players up with great gear including brand sponsorships, get a few brand names on board and supply the guys with thousands of dollars worth of clothes, sunglasses, shoes, etc

Players need to know if they come here they will be 'looked after' just like they know they will be looked after at the broncs, souths, storm, roosters etc

Be able to offer players a network basically but its hard to have a network in place when the power changes all the time.

We need to work on our image too

    • Yes Snake there are a few club chairmen who offer assistance to keep or get players. Cows with cheap houses and Uncle Nick with discount cars (probably discounted by 100%) which in those 2 instances are ok with NRL but helping FFMM buy a cheap car is not. I'm sure some other clubs also have hidden deals going on. Maybe Steve can give a free toilet unblocking service to encourage players here.

  • Geez we haven't got much going for us.

  • 3 & 5 are basically the same thing, but I understand the club does a fair bit of that already, especially in the training, they do a lot of media items especially with the Childrens hospital, but they are not the only ones doing the hospital thing. I have no doubt this aspect is not has highlighted as it should be though.

In the past, the players used to organise family gatherings during the season, & off season, I have attended several of them over the years along with my wife, they are very much a tight bunch & used these events in different players homes, also invitations were given out by players, & also attended by coaches & others. I would imagine this still goes on & as it was back then is still a players invitation get together.

I think its something the club could be involved with, & depending how it goes under the legal eye of the NRL, no reason why the club could not put it on at their expense, not just in homes but they have some good facilities at the club which could be used, especially the restaraunts.

Where do education grants come into play with the cap, are they seen as something added to the players contracted income?
However, there has been several of the players who have shown how they have been studying for various occupations & the like for life after the NRL, its not new but probably not as well known as many would of us may like.

The saleyards facilities could well be extended for get togethers for players & families.

How much though do the players have much spare time? Looking at the workload since the end of this season, I wonder how much spare time they really have had, given the intenstiy of the training programs, several away camps have been held, but are the WAGs & kids allowed to go on them, amongst other questions.

The players association was pushing for players to have 6 or 8 week off per year, a bit more than many workers get, so I think a few more questions in these areas are there to be considered as well.

  • Create a winning and successful culture.
  • It really is quite simple

    WIN

    WIN

    WIN

Play the finals (consistently) and even go so far as contest a GF in the next 3 years.

Then when that happens you whingeing bunch of wusses will be complaining about "ALL" our players getting called up for rep duty.

    • Not only that but the other clubs would be circling to sign players we had to let go owing to cap constraints, happened every year to every club.

  • Well Frankie if a wanted to be a winger and wanker I could become you! How easy it is to criticise but how hard to actually answer the question.

  • #1 Hire the best coach money can buy.

    #2 Pay the most.

    #3 Target the right players.

    #4 Hire the best CEO.

    #5 Hire the craftiest accountants.

#6 Get rid of Sharp, he is an embarrassment.
