You've got to understand the game and always be able to think on your feet but I think a really underrated key is to respect the plays enough so they respect you and want to play for you that then transfers to the team putting in good performances
I'd say it's very hard to even get your foot in the door if you haven't played first grade, and one of the reasons is because players are arrogant and stupid. Plenty of them would refuse to listen to a coach that hasn't played first grade because they would assume he's got no idea. At least until he proved himself as an NRL coach.
I think you need to know you are no more important than the team but it is a collaborative effort whilst still being the leader. To do it well is a balancing act as you have to assert authority through respect but still show you are in the trenches too . I think BA does this really well.
An anal eye for detail and a big personality. You must have both. Gibson said he got into coaching because he was never taught how to do things properly such as correct placement of feet in scrums
Most important thing that makes a good coach is have good players. Good players can make bad coach look good while average team can make good coach look bad.

Very few coaches have not played the game
Roy Masters, Alan Jones, Dan Anderson are a few off the top of my head.
