What is the appeal of Paulo to Parramatta and is he needed?

Michael Caryannis mentioned that Parramatta are not happy Paulo is playing in the WC, preferring he rests his knee over the off-season. He has a chronic knee problem, which more likely could lead to him having another knee arthroscopy or other related surgeries that could have him missing time during the year. Samoa are expected to qualify for the finals. Doing so means Paulo is playing til November. Once WC is done, those players wouldn't return until after New Years, Paulo more likely will be longer in rehab. Now does he need a proper pre-season? No, he has played 280 NRL games and this upcoming season will be his 15th season in the NRL, though it would be good to have Paulo working with the squad leading into what will already be a shortened pre-season, not only due to the WC but also Vegas.

But Caryannis also mentioned that current contract negotiations with Paulo are on hold until after the WC to see how Paulo pulls up. Now what if Paulo either a) gets hurt or b) comes back with his knee needing work further? Obviously Parra are either lowing the contract value or pulling it all together. Now let's say it is the former, well Paulo has no other options. The fact he has a chronic knee issue, most clubs wouldn't want to touch him unless it is for one year only.

If it is the latter, where does that leave the squad heading into 2027? Well currently our middles include:

Spencer Leniu

Sam Tuivaiti

J'Maine Hopgood

Jack Williams

Teancum Brown

Luca Moretti

Matt Doorey

Saxon Pryke

Ryda Talagi

Jackson Koina

Harrison Edwards

and back rowers that can fill in the middle

Charlie Guymer

Jezaiah Funa

With that list, does adding Paulo to that make it stronger? Yes and no. Experience wise it does. As though we have a lot of good juniors coming through in the middles, they are only now starting to come through. Meaning some might need 2-3 years before they are regular first graders. Does Paulo help with their development? Yes, 280 NRL games, he has been there and done that. He is able to lead the young forwards; Talagi, Koina, Popo, Funa, Pryke, Nunn etc.

Though on the other end, though some kids need some time, some also could be ready sooner, Paulo is only going to be here for one more year anyway. Does his value off the field translate still on field? His 2026 season was better than 2025. He is showing his age, though Ryles' has hinted in moving him to the bench full-time. Could that prolong his career? Perhaps. Though also these kids getting game time in NRL is necessary, as well the likes of Doorey, Brown and Moretti can also do their job needed until these kids are ready. Are they as valuable in leadership and aura as Paulo? No, but will they offer similar input on field? Maybe not entirely but they can offer similar, particularly in the run game.

It is Paulo's influence on the polyneasian players that is mentioned as his biggest impact. Now Junior can do that behind the scenes without actually playing, though having that player that is respected next to you on the field fills confidence for certain players. Our focus is bringing through the likes of Sam Tuivaiti, Teancum Brown, Ryda Talagi and the rest in order to take over from the likes of Paulo.

However, there is a new element. Naufahu Whyte credited Leniu with being a big influence in how he improved as a player. If that is the case, could it be that Paulo as that squad member maybe is not needed? I know Paulo gives you 280 games of experience in your squad with a lot of young middles. If he leaves, Spencer would be the only middle, unless Williams plays in the middle too, in the squad with over 100 NRL games. Though we also brought in Jaydn Su'A, who brings 162 NRL games to the club and i mentioned before Williams who has 169 games of experience . Hopgood, though only 71 games, is still experienced somewhat to lead a group of young middles. Is Su'A, Leniu, Williams enough to lead these young forwards along into the future where they are able to meet their potential? Or is having Paulo just that little bit more needed?

For that i would say as mentioned before he is experienced in big games, still has an offload and freakish play. He does what our other middles cannot. Against him though is his knee, how much does he decline and how bad can it get.

Kids like Tuivaiti and Brown got valuable game time in 2026. Tuivaiti is just shy of 30 games. Not a lot but is getting there with experience. So we have one that is heading in the direction of being able to grow on their own. Is Williams, Su'A, Leniu and Hopgood enough? I think it could be. Also Moretti and Doorey both are 50 game players and Kautoga gives Williams the chance to move into the middle if needed.

Paulo’s big-game experience and skill set are hard to replicate, but between Leniu, Su’A, Williams, and Hopgood, the Eels finally have enough senior muscle to guide the emerging pack forward. Given his medical history and contract uncertainty, Parramatta might be better off reallocating that salary cap space elsewhere and letting the new era take full control.

I know on this site, the views on Paulo are literally stuck in the middle. Some love him and want him signed, others do not like him as of now and feel we should move on.

  • We should move on as he's obviously not fully comitted to Parramatta. He's not that good that he's worth bending over for him.  He was leaving until Bears decided he's not good enough for them, we threw him a lifeline and he threw it back in our faces , and now he's willing to risk his 2027 season with us to play in some rubbish exhibition tournament playing for another country .

Just tell him to piss off .  We are supposed to be closing the door on this chapter of entitlement.  Making an example of his attitude would be a great line in the sand .  The flop would be at The Bears on 900k for two years if he wasn't so stupid and signed the contract.

    • Fair points, as to the reason for this blog Wiz. When the Perth deal fell over, to which he was in his rights to chase the extra year, it seemed a fait accompli that he would stay at Parra. Bears wanted Paulo with his experience. But as soon as Horsburgh, who is younger, top quality and arguably a better player right now, they jumped at him and got a deal done. Quite frankly probably smarter since Paulo signs a two year deal, he could get halfway throgh 2027 and his knee is f***ed more than ever and Perth are stuck with him for 2028. Horsburgh they know they will get 3 good years out of him.

Though a few months passed, no other teams other than SL have expressed interest and he is still dictating his terms. So yeah i get what you mean in the sense of he is looking at getting the most out of the game as possible, fair play to him. But that means as a club we have the right to also say "We don't need you".

Will a club pop up if we say no after the WC? Possibly, but the deal will not be on his terms what so ever. SL is his best bet for a 2-3 year deal and apparently doesn't want to uproute his family. It is so odd as Paulo in discussions is trying to get the best deal he can, fair play and is entitled to, but at the same time it is just us, so yeah you are spot on about entitlement.

      • Yeah I don't begrudge him trying his luck , but he did that and came up short.  Now he expects to dictate to us as if he's still the in demand bloke he was 10 years ago.  Thats the part he's not entitled to .

Rewind a few months and my stance was offer him a year at 650k with a year mutual option, that's how I felt , I was literally in favour of keeping him . Not because of silly reasons like him being some super clubman , or due to the myth he's the Islander kid whisperer , etc , simply because he could add some value .  But since then he's really put his attitude on show , and now I'm super convinced he'd be a negative influence.  If we sign him for a year on 600ish K , cool , let's take the punt and see how he goes off the bench with our new pack additions, if we find someone else whilst he's off playing big international superstar playing for his island of 200 people, I must admit I'd get a real chuckle out of the thought of his mrs clipping him across the ear for losing hundreds of thousands in buggering up his Perth and eels deals .

        • As Coryn said, he wants 300 games. He is 20 short. If he comes off the bench, he could get in 2027. Fair to him.

But we offered him one year and a Club Option and that is a fair deal. Where Paulo has stuffed up is how there is no other interest for him. He has nothing to come to us and say "I'll go here if you can't give me this" we can just say "take it or leave it" or he sits on the lounge doing nothing, waiting for a club to call as they lost a forward in the WC or pre-season.

  • Doorey lol Brown and Moretti right there tells me we still need Jnr around.

We need as much experience on deck as possible with the potential of being a 300 gamer for Parra I know Jnr will have that in the back of his mind also.

Definitely still has value on the park also and finally finally the club realises he needs help and they've given him some.I won't be surprised if Jnr has a decent season next year injury dependent that's the only real concern.

Much like Luai will help Mitchell we can't keep rolling out bums next to our best players I don't understand that strategy at all but for some reason that's what we pivoted to.Much like the off the field flush get rid of all the bums who held job titles and get or target guys who've got experience in what we need not some blind Freddy with a blindfold throwing darts at the board. If they fix that we can turn this thing into something great quickly.

    • Fair Coryn, a comment on the other end.

  • No we don't, he is only after money and a free ride. He has only played well when contract is up for renewal. He is not what we need for the culture we are trying to build as he only is showing the things you don't want the young 1's learning and he doesn't help us play better when he plays. We should of moved on and pulled our offer instead of looking desperite which just makes us more vunerable when trying to sign others.

  • For the right price, yes. I think he should be coming off the bench. We are really light on experienced middle forwards. As good as Sam Tuivaiti has been since his debut, he's also had injury troubles. You'd also have Doorey and Hopgood both coming off ACLs. Your forward pack, especially heading into 2027 would not only be light on experience, but really light on game time from the end of 2026.

  • Tuivaiti is going through what kaufusi went through when thrown in.Concussion issues early for all the bravado talked about on here in what we need guess what we still need Jnr and and we need more outside yardage back 5 help which takes heat off our middles coming out of trouble.

The sooner we add another strike and yardage guy in our back 5 the quicker this turnaround becomes. You add POS to this mix and I bet you Bradman Best is an Eel before the end of the 27 season.
