What are your thoughts on the Hayne/Slater rule?

Hey guys, a friend was telling me the other day the NRL has a new rule.

When the attacking team kicks each player must be behind him and if they are not and make contact when the wingers/fullbacks gather the ball and run towards the opposition they will be penalised. Now the old rule would of allowed the kicker run them back onside. But this new rule will see players penalised even if their kicker runs infront of them.

I dont know what the rule is called exactly - common sense will tell me its an offside rule lol

App they call it the hayne slater rule on foxsports because those champion fullbacks will benefit a lot from this rule, which is obvious we've seen what they can do..

But, I could be wrong explaining this rule as this is what I heard I may have missed something please correct me if im wrong. Also I would like to hear your thoughts.

  • are they still offside if they stay outside of 10 m when the defending player picks up the ball?
  • This will help explain better

A down-town play - where a chaser moves past the play-the-ball and charges down the field before a kick has been taken - will not be tolerated by referees with heavier penalties to be enforced.

Players who are simply in front of the kicker will still be penalised as being offside, however if a player is "down town", they will be penalised as being out of play.

Penalties for this infringement will be blown where the ball was kicked, as opposed to offside penalties, which are awarded where the ball lands.

The technicality is that in a yardage kick, the offside players cannot intentionally progress past the play the ball until the ball has gone over their head, so if they've gone and the ball isn't kicked, they're out of play. They would then be penalised for that action back at the play the ball. It's basically a bigger penalty.
  • hehe yeah alright this is sure to cause some confusion, maybe throw this one in the bunker. If it works though, our guy haynesy could really reap the benefits of it.
  • I think it can only help give guys like Hayne and Slater more time and room to weave their magic.
  • much better - thanks daneel
  • i need a demonstration of this rule in play. I hope the footy shows does one. I'm confused so far. why do they change the rules every year. it's so frustrating.
  • agreed
  • My guess is there will be much more kicking from dummy half and probably create more traffic and confusion at the play the ball on later tackles.
