Versatility

It was mentioned during commentary on Friday night that back in the day Cowboys hooker Jake Granville played fullback for Paul Green when he was coaching at Wynnum Manly in the Queensland Cup. Was also reading today that Lachlan Coote is considering a move from fullback into the halves. Peter Wallace seems to be going alright at hooker for Penrith at the moment.

Just wondering if circumstances necessitated a particular position to be filled in our roster (through injury or suspension), is there any particular player that you think would do a good job playing out of their current position.

For example, I think some way, some how Bevan French needs to get a start in first grade. I would be interested to see how he went at five eighth rather than fullback. What player would you like to see play first grade out of their current position?

  • Agreed!.

  • Bevan is still 2 years from regular first grade. Only severe injuries to our squad would see him debut earlier. In still not sold he will make it at all. First grade is more than running around players.
  • Oh my god sometimes it's hard to even express an idea or thought on this forum without someone telling you that you are wrong. Of all people horo you should know this after your Nathan peats blog the other night.
I'm not saying bevan French should take over from Corey Norman as of next week. In all likelihood Norman will get his contract extended and be our five eighth for years to come. All I'm saying is French has something to offer in that position and may be worth a try if the opportunity were to present itself. I'm just interested to hear people's thoughts thinking a little outside the square that's all.
    • French has been played in the halves, for 3 games last year in the 20's. He can fill in there for half a game because of how strong his passing and running game is but I wouldn't like seeing him defend full time in the front line. His defence at fullback is alright but there'd be a lot of traffic sent his way if he were there (front line defence) every week.

  • Yes the place to try that would be at wenty now that kelly is out for the season.
  • Thanks Brett I agree with what you are saying there with the interchange, puts a bigger demand on the coach during the game to utilize his bench according to how the game is progressing. Also offers greater flexibility and bigger rewards.

I guess what I'm getting at is the skill set and physical attributes for a dummy half, a five eighth and a fullback are all reasonably similar and therefore one player COULD be used to fill any/all of those positions. If Nathan Peats were to get injured or get called up to play origin, would it be out of the realms of possibility that Michael Gordon for example could do a pretty decent job at hooker. I mean he is a fullback so his positional play is good, he supports the play well, has no dramas putting boot to ball and I've never heard him criticized for his defence.

  • I think daniel wagin was the king of versatility
  • I watch Qld Cup and never saw Granville play anything other than hooker. In reality should be playing for Parra (I mean Granville is suburb of Parra) but we tried to get him when Peats first injured and Broncos wouldn't release him. We got IDG instead, another missed opportunity.

    • Glenn the comment was made at the 52nd minute of the game on Friday night that Granville played fullback for Wynnum Manly under Paul Green's coaching. I have no idea if this is correct or not but that is what was said.

  • I believe Penny's will go alright this year if injuries don't happen like last year. Moylan adds so much to the side and was out most of season last year. I am still trying to rate him as everything looks effort free to him. Panthers still playing same brand as last year injury free.

"I did modern day as 1998 onwards as I didn't see them play, as some here haven't. Where I believe majority of people here have seen all the modern day players play.
Plus it frees up some spots like we all know who 5/8 will be but now no idea."
