Modern Day best 17

Evening everyone, how good is it having footy back.

Now i want to do something different as a series. I will have surveys maybe once a day to decide who is the best player per position to create an overall top 17. Now positions like Fullback for example will be top vote. But positions like Wing where there are two of, the top 2 results get in. When it comes to the bench i will go traditional and go with a Utility, two Props and a back-rower. So i will recycle other options that didn't get picked for bench spots.

First one is Fullback. If i missed any players that you feel should be there i apologise.

  • Can you define what era / year your modern day starts from.

I took Jarryd Hayne on your survey, but I also loved Luke Burt as a team man. Luke Burt reminded me so much of little Paul Taylor, did so much work but never got the credit he deserved.

    • Sorry should have clarified, 1998 NRL era.

I stuck to what i knew best. I love Luke Burt, still my favourite ever player, hence the dp. He didn't have that flashy skills like Hayne and was undersized but to accomplish 260+ games is an achievement and feel he is severley underappreciated. He didn't really have a step but would weave past defences. But his best asset was his brain. He was a brilliant football mind, his eyes rarley deceived him. One play i remember is 2010 i believe against the Dogs, where he took the ball from dummy half on the 5th, ran down the blind, saw the Fullback in the line, kicked in between two Dogs players, ran around them, regathered and scored. It was such a risk but wonderful play. Even that play from the scrum where the lock would pick it up and boot it down field and Burt would chase hovering around the feed.

Even better, once the best gentlemen's of the game. Had so many interactions with him and always a top bloke. But this one is easy, Hayne is still to me the most naturally gifted footballer i have ever seen. A lot of what he did was effortless.

      • He played 134 of his 264 games as a winger. Didnt complain once like a Lomax when required on the wing. Was a team man through and through. He deserves to be in the Modern Day Best Eels team somewhere. Perhaps now that we have 6 interchange players to choose from on game day , he makes my 6 man bench. Lol.

  •  I understand the modern day theory.  It has to be the players that would work in the modern day game,  But the theory should include how a player from the say 80s would perform given the modern day technology and training regime.

You cant simply transfer a player through time and play him in the modern game as no player from the 80s would make it.

Kenny wouldn't make the modern day 19 unless he was trained under today's standards

    • Old vs New. Pre 1998 Eels best team wearing the original Gold Jerseys vs post 1998 Eels best team wearing today's Blue jersey. The best from both eras playing against each other in a virtual stadium online. Jack Gibson coaching Gold, Brian Smith coaching the Blue.

      Id pay to watch that.

Kenny stepping Jason Smith only to be tackled by Hayne near the line.

Eric Grothe senior busting 5 tackles to be taken over touch by Eric junior his son

Mitch Moses chip kick over Sterlo's head, regathers to be taken out by Price in cover defence.

The Crow outsmarting Timana Tahu out wide with a dummy.

Brad Drew and Steve Edge belting each other in the middle of the scrum

Junior Paulo and Bob O'Reilly smashing into into each other, giving no ground.

Peter Wynn running onto the ball , busting through the edge  with Hindmarsh ankle tapping him in desperation.

Ron Lynch running straight over the top of Daniel Wagon.

Sivo rampaging from the back, leaving players in his wake to have the zip zip man making a legs tackle from behind.

yeah i/d pay to see that

    • I did modern day as 1998 onwards as I didn't see them play, as some here haven't. Where I believe majority of people here have seen all the modern day players play.

Plus it frees up some spots like we all know who 5/8 will be but now no idea.
