TPA's, Parramatta should go back to them

This might be a bit of a touchy topic considering what happened in 2016. We have seen TPA's dominate our game for a long time, an added incentive for players and teams to keep their man players while staying within the salary cap. Is it fair? well i mean every team is able to do it, just some better than others while some (us included) choose not to. Parramatta on one hand i feel need to go back to using them, getting stung in 2016 by has rattled the new management to going down that path. However, that is the big word, new, this management is smarter and more responsible than previous management. If the use of TPA's is back at Parramatta, O'Neill and Sarantinos would use it to full effect and legally. The fact they have not used TPA's and still managed to be a competitive team since O'Neill has taken over is quite miraculous to be fair, imagine what the use of TPA's could do.

ALAND is a massive construction company, surely they would have links like Laundy have for Canterbury. It is legal for ALAND to supply players with TPA's, only illegal if that sponsor also sponsors the club themselves. Now the reason for Parramatta not to use them can also be that we do not want big names that cost $1 million dollars. We like to do the Penrith route but different, buy cheaper players and develop them into stars and buy mid range players or players that were good but have had some bad form. If a Payne Haas or an Addo-Carr came onto the market, Parramatta would not even look at them as it is not their type of player. Look at our top earners (Gutherson, Paulo, RCG, Moses) RCG is the only one that is a big name but when he signed nobody really wanted him due to his salary and form, but players that needed development and we made them Origin stars. But TPA's could have been brought in to sign Mahoney, Papa and others up and keep the cap number low. Players are loyal to a certain degree but when money is involved they make the move to take it which is fair. Offer Papali'i 425k with TPA's the offer is maybe a tiny bit lower than Wests but loyalty might be able to sway him to stay, difference from 100k to 400k in TPA's. We could be a powerhouse, this management give values and rarely go over those values, Mahoney for example it seems they did in their final pitch but only went over say 100k, TPA's in that situation could have helped, Canterbury TPA's added would make it 800k he would get overall i guess but again TPA's make offers close and use loyalty as a ploy to make the difference.

Am i way off or should Parramatta use TPA's again? we have the management to use it and they will only use it if completely necessary.

  • Only problem is that majority of TPAs will be going to 2-3 key players and not the players you mentioned.

And we like to run the football team with one hand tied behind our back compared to the top tier

    • Yeah the major ones were all a case of whistleblowing. The problem is it's very hard to police, particularly when you are dealing with experienced businessman like Politis. They deal with much harder things in their lives than pulling the wool over the eyes of the dopes at the NRL.

  • The player managers should be sorting TPA's as it is supose to have nothing to do with the clubs.

  • The big name journalists, player managers and club bosses all have their hands in the money pie.

They all feed off each other.

  • What does a TPA get in return for sponsoring a player?

  • There are very few legitimate TPA's in the game. 3rd party agreements between a player and a sponsor that does not include the club. An example of a legit one would be when a player does an advert for say a sports drink etc not wearing his club colours. It's a very clear sponsorship with benefits to both player and sponsor. You can count on one hand those type of legitimate deals.
The bulk of the so called TPA's are merely ways to circumvent the salary cap. When local Dragon's supporter and owner of Bob's Plumbing organises a $50k TPA for a Dragon's player are we truly mean to all accept that this has nothing to do with the club and indeed that sponsorship would follow the player to another club? Where is the value for Bob's plumbing in such an arrangement because I don't see that player doing any promotion for Bob's plumbing?
The job of arranging TPA's actually lies with the player manager, but since when do they actually do anything for their money?
It certainly helps if you have extremely wealthy benefactors involved in the club. They have literally hundreds of ways to make arms length payments to a player, all of which fall outside of the purview of the Salary Cap Audit committee. If you can't beat them, join them.

    • That's spot on. I know of a couple of dudes who used to do these TPAs at the eels and they never got any actual value from a promotional point of view out of it. They did it because they were eels tragics and got to go to a few player bbqs and stuff. They were all done through the club and that's the case for 99% of these things.

      • Spot on, ME and Mutts. Btw, does anyone have the latest TPA figures? Last I heard they've been declining.

Hardline compliance with the NRL's hard cap is close to competitive suicide.

Other "financial instruments" gaining a competitive advantage would be at play. Probably, including some sort of post-NRL career promises with networks, and so on.

TBH, I feel a softer cap is a better way to go than the NRL's hard cap. At least clubs like us, who don't have business savvy heavy-hitters leading the charge, might stand a better chance, LOL.

  • The problem LB is right at the start in your heading. The club cannot have anything to do with a TPA, to be legal its just that simple. To be a TPA the club or any club sponser is not allowed to make any payment to a player, organise any payment or offer organise a payment to induce someone to play for your club. If they do it goes on the salary cap. Your whole premise is flawed.

Mate as long as you have no affiliation to the club then get a shitload of people together and offer a player some money, but you cant say to that player its only if you play for Parra. As soon as you do its supposed to go on the cap. Thats what people dont get. The word TPA has changed in the common supporters understanding because of the many rorts over the years. A true TPA is something like a player is an electrician during the week he works for a subby and does electrical work and gets paid for that. He also plays NRL. The electrical work must be registered with the NRL and then approved as a TPA. IT is supposed to have absolutley nothing to do with the clubs or NRL.

What players can earn outside the salary cap

Unlimited - Players can earn unlimited amounts from corporate sponsors who are not associated with the club and who do not use the game's intellectual property (no club logos, jerseys or emblems) provided these are pre-approved by both a Player’s Club and the NRL. These agreements may not be negotiated by the club as an incentive for a player to sign a contract, nor can they be guaranteed by the club.

Other Benefits - Tertiary education fees, approved traineeships, medical insurance costs, relocation/temporary accommodation costs are not included in the cap but must be approved

What about money paid from other people or companies?

If a player is receiving money from any person as a way of inducing him to play for the club, then that money will be included in the Salary Cap.

Income that a player earns from parties not related to his club is generally not included in the Salary Cap, however, the details of the agreement must be advised to the club by the player.

The club must then get approval for the agreement from the Salary Cap Auditor in order for the remuneration to be excluded.

Players are also able to enter into agreements with game sponsors, referred to as Sponsor Leveraging Agreements. There is no maximum amount and they are excluded from the salary cap.

    Third Party Agreements

Third party agreements are payments made by companies directly to players. There is no restriction on the amount a player can earn through third party agreements where he is being paid for his own intellectual property, without the need to employ club logos or names and where the company involved is neither a club sponsor nor are they acting on behalf of a club to secure the player's services.

All third party agreements must be registered and approved beforehand. This is to ensure that they do not become a way for clubs or players to use sponsors or third parties to undermine the salary cap and also for the game to ensure the protection of club and game intellectual property.

This has been a bit more long winded then i like and ive cut and paste some from the NRL website.

    • If that is from the NRL, that is laughable. So it's clear that they turn a blind eye to exactly their own rules. What they need to do is make it explicitly clear what the benefit to the third party is. I know people should be free to gift money to a particular player if he players for a certain club, but this ambiguity is causing the loopholes we see every year. This is where the NRL needs to fix the system. The fact that they have not even tried suggests they are either incapable, they don't care, or they are themselves corrupt.
