Toyota cup Eels 30-18 vs Penthers

The Battle of the West started with the rivaled NYC sides’ showing little remorse for each other. But it was the Eels’ who claimed glory with a second half performance to remember. The newly named ‘Giant Killers’ were jumping for joy with a surprising victory over the Panthers’ 30-18.The Pirtek Parramatta Eels’ opened the stanza in the seventh minute through a Dan Cross kick that found Daniel Tupou on the right wing. In usual fashion, the big winger soared high over defenders to touch down. But ten minutes later the Panthers’ had hit back with two of their own. Their first coming through Jack Twist who breezed through the Eels’ defensive line and the next coming from a strong charge by Reece Goldsmith who touched down under the post.At the back end of the first half and down 12-4, the Eels’ attacked constantly. Daniel Tupou and Jacob Loko wrecked havoc and pint sized Dan Cross with room to move was able to give his side repeated sets.On the back of those repeated sets T.K Amosa was able to duck under Penrith defenders’ close to the line scoring, bringing the margin closer at 4 points. The score remained the same until half time 12-8.Second half play commenced and it was the Panthers’ who attacked early this time. Their centre with a break up through the middle, but a brilliant try saving tackle just inches out by T.K Amosa had the Panthers’ in disbelief.Five minutes, the Panthers’ went on the attack again throwing their entire arsenal at the Eels’, Jack Twist crossing for his second after a great ball from team mate Blake Austin. With twenty-six minutes remaining the Eels’ fought back and after a T.K Amosa kick in goal gave them a repeated set, the Eels were able to score. This time Ken Sio chased through a kick from Dan Cross, touching it down inches before the dead ball line. The margin was back to four again and back on level terms. The Panthers became frustrated with the amount of pressure the Eels’ were placing on them, which in return gave Parramatta great field possession.Close to the line, the Panthers’ defence eventually gave up and bulky forward P.J Asiata posted his first try of the season, the Eels’ going back to back and taking the lead for the first time in the match 20-18.The Eels’ began looking like the competition front-runners, the ‘Giant Killers’ on a train of momentum with fourteen minutes remaining. They were controlling the possession with ease, and then an offload from Daniel Tupou gave Ken Sio room to move, showing Penrith players’ the back of his boots and touching down in the corner.Down 24-18 and with five minutes to go the Panthers’ threw everything that they had left in the tank at the Eels’ almost crossing in the corner to tie it up, but the referee ruled a forward pass. The Eels’ went onto win from here and in the dying moment’s showcased further brilliance with Rory Brien breaking through and offloading it onto a supporting Dan Cross. The Eels’ with a surprising win 30-18.PARRAMATTA EELS 30 (Ken Sio 2, Daniel Tupou, T.K Amosa, P.J Asiata, Dan Cross Goals T.K Amosa 3/6) defeated PENRITH PANTHERS 18 (Jack Twist 2, Reece Goldsmith tries; David Farkas 3/3 goals)http://www.parraeels.com.au/default.aspx?s=article-display&id=27958&title=toyota-cup-eels-win-again-at-foot-of-the-mountains

  • Lol. I think the club getting carried away with the "giant killers" tag, Penrith aren't far above us on the table...

But as I said about a month ago you can expect this side to keep getting better and better and they're going to be a real force. Another good game from Daniel Tupou it would seem. If anyone saw the match would appreciate any insights :-)

They need to find a halfback for next year and they'll kill it.
  • I was at the game Phil, was an outstanding win by the youngsters, really dug deep was great entertainment.

Dan Cross had probably the best game iv'e seen him play, really stepped up and got himself involved set up a few tries.

O'Hanlon just looked class, he reminds me of Luke Lewis does alot of work but has great skill with the ball aswell.

The big prop 8 I think his name is P.J something? Was outstanding, he ran like an absolute bull and it would not surprise me if he made almost 200 metres in minimal game time as well.

I rate O'brien very highly as a player and I was talking to my old man about him just saying how he'd had a quiet game, then he made a break up the middle and set up the winning try haha.

Last but not least Jacob Loko, it was my first time watching him play live, the hype is warranted. WEAPON!!!! I know why your excited with this kid Phil. Everytime he touched the ball he just about made a break, his upper body strength is amazing he was literally throwing defenders off him as he was running, and his leg drive was very very impressive also. He reminds me of Tony Williams just how he looked so much more physically developed and stronger than his opponents, the difference with Loko is he looked a fantastic laterall mover and he also came looking for work.

It's a big call but I think you could chuck him in 1st grade now and he would do some damage with ball in hand, whether or not he could handle the speed of 1st grade atm would be a massive query however. Loko and Sio could be a long term combination for Parramatta imo, Sio I have no doubt could come into first grade now and do a job, safe as a house and has speed to burn as well.
    • That's P.J. Asiata. He's always had a lot of promise - saw him absolutely dominate one SG Ball game. I'm glad he's getting going again,

Re: Loko - remember he's two years younger than most of the other boys as well!

I don't know what happened with our halves at the start of the year, both Dan Cross and T.K. on their good days are both exceptional players but neither of them have really fired this year. I wish we'd have won three or so of those close games we lost through the year because they could have been setting up for an NRL like run at the finals.
  • I also thought young Cam Picker put in a solid performance. Forced a dropout towards the back end of the game that lead to a repeat set. Did the small things well and has been a good inclusion at 5/8. Thoughts?
    • That was only his second match for us at NYC level, wasn't it? It's interesting that he's been selected over Wehbe - I'm not sure if he's injured or not but Wehbe was first choice six during the SG Ball season. But if that was his second game for us, we're two for two now with him at six!
