Time for coaches to grow up - Greenberg

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg says ''it is not on and not right' to singlehandedly blame the referees for the results of the majority of the NRL finals games in the first weekend of September, labelling the post-match sprays from a number of coaches as unwarranted.Greenberg fronted the press on the back of pressure to correct some of the poor displays from the referees as the Eels, Sea Eagles and Cronulla were all on the receiving end of dodgy calls that had an influential role on the scoreboard. The CEO called out the fans, media and respective coaches of each side for playing the blame game and developing a whinging culture that is damaging the game's reputation.''In a fantastic round of finals it has been marred by the response of the losing teams,'' Greenberg said.''Unfortunately we have developed a culture in our game of blaming match officials for a loss. It sets a terrible example to fans and a terrible example to grassroots and it's got to stop.''It's time for the game to grow up.''...I'm not saying the referees are perfect, they never have been and they never will be. I'm not saying that our referees got every call right, but I have reviewed the games and I can tell you that the vast majority of the calls were spot on.''The disputes we are are talking about are on some really tight calls, 50/50 calls, and there will be debate and there will be controversy no matter which way that they go. That is the game.''Players make mistakes too and that's what costs games, that's why teams lose, it's not the referees.ADVERTISEMENT''And that culture has to change. We have to grow up and take responsibility for our own outcomes.''The Eels were unlucky to concede the opening try against Melbourne as Curtis Scott's pass to Josh Addo-Carr appeared to go forward out of his hands, while Manly went down in the dying minutes on the back of a controversial Tyrone Peachey try that looked to be a knock-on.Parramatta coach Brad Arthur and Manly mentor Trent Barrett launched a tirade in front of reporters after the game, then Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan dealt the final blow as he pinpointed 10 different moments where he believes the referees went against his side, forcing Greenberg to stand up and take action.Manly and Cronulla will receive breach notices within the next 24 hours, with both Barrett and Flanagan expected to cop a hefty fine for their outbursts.

  • Fuck off Todd , how about adressing the errors and not the coaches for flagging them . This is why we are where we are you dumb fuckig twat .

Address it now before you ruin another season with your bad calls . What he shoud be saying is " right ... for the rest of this finals series I'll be asking the refs that unless it's a clear cut run away try all decisions can go to the bunker . Some may be a quick glimpse others may be heavily looked at . But something like the Melbourne first try will be looked at without doubt "

    • Well said Brissy; i also note he was in Sunday's Tele with his support for same sex marriage; or as i say wanting to change the marriage act. This is another reason why I've lost huge time and respect for the game. I am over the political left sports in our country have taken, and i include league, cricket and AFL of which 2 are or were my favourite, but seem to be about promoting social causes to please the women, aboriginals, gays, domestic violence and whatever else.....
NRL only seem to be happy promoting minority causes IMO and strategies for social outcomes; the game has avg for years and this TG always spins his way ahead.
You're spot on about that money in the game; and the salary cap..? What's the go?
      My rant done.
  • Forget the 50/50 calls that can go either way. What shits me is the clear misinterpretation of basic rules. Refs miss so many clear penalties for offside and play the ball infringements then decide to blow a penalty out of the blue. These are often massive game changers that have me wondering why they are blown when they are.

When was the last penalty given for something simply like a player not getting to his feet to play the ball? Yet this happens every game. This is a simple rule to enforce yet it isn't. The refs decide the outcome for too many games and stupid comments like Greenbergs are the main reason why fans aren't going to games.
    • Agreed mate; and when refs point at players but don't penalise, that really peeves me.
    • I was screaming blue murder when slater got that penalty!!
  • Was hust about to poat this

    What a dope
