The Wooden Spooners

I've been thinking, isn't it strange how this year's wooden spooners were statistically Roosters and Cronulla? Now I know this site is about Parramatta but just think, isn't it just weird that last years 'do gooders' actually almost failed to even win a quarter of their games? Both of them have pretty strong and talented teams, and both of their coaches are OK, so why couldn't they even do better than Canberra or New Zealand? I want answers!

  • Notice that both of those clubs were the two most involved with disciplinary trouble.
  • Mate Cronulla were deadset fielding a team half full of reserve graders and half full of Toyota Cup players (who were down near the bottom of their own division). They had a hard year and it just goes to show how pitifull the roosters were that somehow Cronulla avoided the Spoon.

New Zealand went into the start of the season as second favourites for the competition, they were not meant to finish so far down the ladder.
    • I think New Zealands weak link is their young and inexperienced coach.
  • To Cronulla: You rip your heart and soul out of your club (Kimmorley) and seriously what can you expect. And as blueNgold mentioned, they were crueled by injuries/players glassing their gfs etc.

I actually tipped the Roosters to win the wooden spoon. Should have backed it, they would have been big odds. I fully agree, their issue was simply discipline and having a shit attitude. Brian Smith will turn them around pretty quickly next year, IMO.
    • I think the bottom three teams next year will be New Zealand, Cronulla and North Queensland
      • cronulla yes definately, nz will be just out of the 8 but cowboys will make the 8 next year I think.
my bottom three for next year is cronulla, penrith, tigers
    • Mate, I can't agree. They had a whole group of young blokes who are now ready to come through. Particularly Moltzen looks like he can finally be the halfback they've been searching for. Ayshford, Ryan, Lawrence,. All quality young players who will be able to put on a heaps of points off the back of Marshall. You don't get a wooden spoon with Benji Marshall in your team (unless he gets injured of course). And then they've got a tough physical pack as well. I don't rate any of the players they lose except for Gallant.
      • Add to that a Toyota Cup squad that made the grand final this year
  • I think next season has tha ability to be the closest on record. That is points between the Minor Premiers and the Spooners. The sides that were all down near the bottom will improve, and I can't see many teams above them being that much worse.

Saying that I don't think the Roosters or Sharks have bought enough quality to move them totally away from the bottom they will be there or there abouts. I think the Knights will be found out this season, and will be down near the Roosters and Sharks.
  • I reckon next year's spoon will be heading back up the F3 to Newcastle. New coach, aging players, not much recruitment.

Absolutely, balance is always key, right?
Are humans capable of that? Would history suggest that as a species we can hold greed in one hand, morality in the other, and choose morality?
I agree with HOE, humans are ultimately the problem,…"
