I'm not one for much superstition but the arrival of Stuart has seen comparisons drawn between him and Supercoach Jack Gibson. Before anyone discounts this as well as our prospects of winning the comp next year let me draw some similarities between the start of Gibson's tenure and the start of Stuart's tenure.
Firstly I'll start with the players. The legendary Arthur Beetson had just retired after spending his final season with Parramatta. I'll liken this to the retirement of Hindy. We had some young up and coming players, as well as some beginning to reach their peak in the form of Cronin, Grothe Snr, Sterling and Kenny. These days we have Hayne, Sio, Sandow and Kelly. I'm not saying that these guys are the modern day versions of legends, it's just for the sake of an example of what I mean.
Secondly, we'll look at the 2 coaches. Gibson had won premierships with the Roosters previous to linking with Souths where he had his leanest years. Stuart has won a premiership with the Roosters before linking with Cronulla and having lean years.
Lastly, it's the fans. Both times they were desperate for Premiership success. Before Gibson took over, Parra lost 2 Grand Finals. The same is said for Stuart. I know it's practically clutching at straws but still, it's hope we can hang onto that Stuart will deliver a long awaited Premiership next season.

awesome blog mate and great pointing out. the best thing we have at the moment is hope and optimism :)
Well lets pray for supertition
I'm pumped and prepared for success fellas
What a flawed blog.
Loved Wayne Bennett during the week saying the Eels were the hardest club to coach in the NRL and only one coach had ever made a go of it, and he was the greatest coach the game has seen !!
Who is the 2013 version of Price, The Bear, Edge Hilditch and Kevin Stevens ? Despite the hype of the Eels backs the forwards were seasoned pros who never took a back ward step.
Then you had one the greatest backlines ever assembled emerge from no where.
How are there similarities ?
As for Stuart, rarely has made finals, destroyed two clubs, lost 2 state of origins. Is inheriting a team that will have run last and second last. If he makes any better than 12th he has done well. Lets set expectations at the right levels. 2013 will be another out of the 8 year.
Did you not read part of the blog? I stated that the players I named aren't exactly the modern day versions, they're more or less the representations of those players. If you want to get pedantic then O'Reilly was built like a brick sh*t house - modern day equivalent is Fui. We just had Price's replacement announce his retirement this year. Actually read my blog properly before commenting.
In there I state that Gibson won his first premierships at Easts, as did Stuart. Both went to Cronulla after early success and neither made an impact as both failed to make a finals appearance. Gibson then moved to Parra where he won 3 premierships. Stuart is now at Parra and we await his efforts. Stuart was the last coach to win a State of Origin series for NSW and has re-instilled the fire needed to win another series. We have the cattle to do it. It's a case of those players coming together and playing for each other, with passion and with pride in the jersey.
Yes I agree somewhat SuperE22. Gibson's arrival was about timing and perhaps not all of it was intentional. As DA once used the term there seemed to be an "alignment of the planets", there was a reservoir of talent that was either going to go forward in a big way or others may have rocketed into oblivion. Couple this with a hunger for a premiership and the right coach to unlock the potential of that talent, constituted one hell of a footy side. It was interesting as Sterling already had been use in different positions with moderate success ending up still in 1980 as a utility/ replacement player. Gibson earmarked him for a permanent gig as halfback and that's where he stayed and the rest is history as they say. One thing so noticeable when Gibson took over the reins was the immediate vibe across all the grades in particular first grade. From my memory the body language and intensity, from trial games to pre- season through to actual premiership matches was fierce and competative, there was indeed something very different about how we played. It just seemed from very early on that we were going to be something special. I hope this is going to be another "alignment of the planets" so to speak lol.
This energy and intensity you speak of makes me think that the only modern day coach who can get that out of his players is Stuart. He's passionate, enthusiastic and wants you to try until that final whistle. I can see glory ahead for us.
And to add to that - Santa rides a UNICORN.
Now Colin was that directed at me ?
from another angle, this appoint draws comparisons of the stephen kearney appointment
