The McIntyre system is GOOD and here's why.

I'm sick of people (especially Vossy) complaining about the McIntyre system.There are so many advantages to it over the AFL system, and here's some.- Any team can play any team in the Grand Final when the finals start. This is not the case in AFL- The Top 2 teams after week 1 get a week off which is just reward for a) being high enough on the ladder to get a crack at it and b) WINNING the first week of the finals against a lower team.- The uncertainty of who goes in the first week is part of the excitement of the system. Sure, Manly got kicked out because of it but, well they should have won. You win, you give yourself that chance.- If you lose in the first week to a lower team, damn right you shouldn't get the home final in week 2. You had your chance, now deal with it. If you're good enough to win away in Week 2, you deserve to be thereIn fact, I shouldn't even bring the home/away concept into it. That's not part of the McIntyre system. That is just the NRL policy on who gets home advantage and it has changed over the years. I think they have got it right now, where-as they used to have finals games in Sydney regardles of who was playing.I'm not just saying this because of how the Eels are going. I truly think the McIntyre system (which we ironically took from AFL in the first place) is the superior system.Now you have the RLPA lobbying to change it. I think that's ridiculous. i hope the NRL doesn't succumb, because any other system wouldn't do our game justice.

The McIntyre system is, quite rightly, pilloried because it has the potential to overly reward a team that limps into the 8 and overly punish a team that has shown consistency over the previous 26 rounds. I always find it amusing those who say things like, "If you lose in the first week of the finals, tough"!

That's bullshit! As we know, in the modern game, injuries, home crowd advantage and inept decision making by the match officials dictate results and I don't think it fair that if those external influences, over which a team has no control, conspire against them, then their previous half-year of consistency ought to be punished. In AFL, these influences have less of an impact as penalties are generally less costly and the game is played on a larger field for more minutes so the better team on the day almost always wins. I dare you to make the same claim for Rugby League!

Yet, after almost 100 years of employing it, the AFL punted the McIntyre system because they saw the obvious flaws in the system! I'm not being smug here because the AFL did adopt our oft ridiculed 'loading' system for their judiciary, yet it wouldn't hurt us to adopt the far more fair top 8 system the AFL employ.

As happy as I am that we get a home game tonight, I can't see how a team that lost only 7 games all year, after 1 loss in the finals, now has the toughest double road trip in the game - Brisbane in Brisbane and Melbourne in Melbourne. If we were minor premiers and were consigned to such inequity, you, me and every other Parra fan would be screaming the house down!

You're right. The point of the semis is it needs to cull teams otherwise they'll go on till Christmas. Sadly someone has to go and it's only the team that are knocked out that's whingeing. Bennett was moaning after his Drags got pumped by the Eels. What did he expect, three more weeks off and a smoked ham for each player? Semi final football is about finding the best team who can handle the pressure. That's why they get to be called premiers and win a big shiny trophy and stuff. Sad as that may sound, that's the facts. Live with it. Why should a team like the Dragons that ran hot and then faded be so advantaged over a team like the Eels they'd faded and then ran hot?

Bro Vossy has been an advocate for the McIntyre system for years. The only reason he has started to say we should change to the AFL system is because the McIntyre system is still too confusing for the everyday person to understand it.

I'm like nick, I honestly don't care which system is taken, although the AFL system is fairer all round it does in fact eliminate alot of the excitement from the games as the viewers know what the outcomes of the results will be, where the McIntyre is capable of throwing in alot more shocks and surprises.

  But the flaws you point out aren't to do with the system. It's to do with the Home/Away policies.
  
  The NRL could keep the system, but change who gets the home games in weeks 2 and 3.
  
  I do see your point that the Dragons get a tough round to the GF, but I still stand by the fact that they lost their game against the lowest team in the 8 and get what they deserve. i would say the same if Parra were beaten in Week 1 from position 1 as well.

I guess I'm in a minority here but think a bit harsh that the premiers lose a game and are off to Queensland to face the 6th placed team who quite honestly only strung a few decent games together (I know...) and were average for much of the season.At the end of the day you have to beat any team ,any where ,anytime ,to win the GF but you should get something for turning up week in week out for 80 % of the season.

  one point parraloft is that the eels have played 1,3 and now have to play 2 to get into the grand final. on the flipside st george played 8 now they play 6 and if they win they play 4 t go to the big one. the home ground stuff isnt quite right, but after coming 1st the dragqueens dont have to play another top 4 side until the prelim final, and they lost first round.

I agree Mick.

People keep crapping on about how St George was dudded, etc, but they don't realise or don't acknowledge that the McIntye system rewards winners. They think that teams that finish at the top of the 8 should be given a leisurely passage through to the GF, whereas teams that finish in the bottom of the 8 should be made to struggle. If that's the case, then why don't teams 1 and 2 play the grand final with no finals series, or why bother with a grand final at all?

Under the NRL's McIntyre system, the top teams are rewarded with a home game and a higher likelihood of getting a week off than teams below them. But if they don't perform, bad luck .. if they want to make the GF they have to fight their way back. If they are good enough, they will.

The AFL system rewards teams that performed best during the season. The McIntyre system rewards teams that perform best in the finals. If this is perceived by the majority of people as unfair, then maybe it has to change. I'm OK with it.
