Rising NRL talent Tristan Sailor has been charged over an alleged sexual assault in Sydney last weekend and will remain in police custody until his court appearance on Sunday.

The 22-year-old fullback who is the son of rugby league icon Wendell Sailor was arrested at his family home in Wollongong at 7.40am on Saturday morning.

He has been charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault - inflict actual bodily harm on victim a NSW police spokewoman said. A search warrant was conducted on the family home with the Dragons club also informed of the on-going investigation.

In an earlier statement on Friday, prior to his arrest, police said they were investigating reports a woman was sexually assaulted by a 22-year-old man Saturday October 3.

“The investigation is being led by detectives from St George Police Area Command, with the assistance of officers from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad,” a police spokesperson said.

Sailor was denied police bail and remanded in custody to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Sunday.

Rated one of Queensland rugby league’s most promising prospects, Sailor has endured a fall from grace this season.

Sailor, who boasted an impressive 300kg squat in the Dragons gym, was earmarked as a future State of Origin player by former Queensland coach Kevin Walters.

He was chosen in Queensland’s under-18s squad in 2016 before being invited to a Maroons Emerging Origin squad camp the following year.

The speedy utility made his NRL debut last year, but he struggled for regular action this season, playing just two games amid speculation he was eyeing a release from the club.

Sailor’s fate at the Red V was sealed last month when incoming coach Anthony Griffin advised the Maroons hopeful he would not be part of his plans for a Dragons fightback in 2021.

That prompted a furious spray from his famous father Wendell, who said the Dragons failed to reward Sailor for his impressive pre-season.

“He was told by the club that if he had a big off-season, he would be in the mix this year but he never got any game time,” Sailor told Channel Nine.

“Now they say he is not wanted - my wife and I are very disappointed that he never got the opportunity to show what he’s got on the field.”

It is understood Rugby Australia expressed some interest in Sailor given their history with Wendell, who played 37 games for the Wallabies following his code defection from the Broncos.

  •  with the assistance of officers from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad,” a police spokesperson said.

THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is looking very serious.

    • The name makes it sound worse it doesn't necessarily mean a child is involved

      • True - once upon a time Child abuse, and child sexual abuse used to be a completely seperate division.

Anyhow let's see how this pans out - not being given bail suggests to me this is far more serious than just a simple touch up type of offence.

  • is there a problem with the cupboard guys
