The crusher tackle

Im a firm believer that the crusher tackle is a blight on Rugby League. It is making our game worse than soccer. All a player needs to do is to hold their neck when someone as much as touches them and they get a penalty and someone goes on report. Some of the most recent ridiculous examples of this are Matt Scott and Manu Mau.This penalty needs to be erradicated from our game or players needed to be penalized if they dive

  • Disagree. Never happened back in the day.
Started when teams started to be coached to make sure player is on their back when tackle is complete to slow the play the ball. It's not so much the tackle but it's the putting the player in that dangerous position as a result of the getting the slow play the ball hence the pressure on the head n neck.
    • Its the softest penalty in the game.
The tackle that Mau got reported for on the Tigers player was wosrse than a dive in soccer.
Matt Scott got reported again tonight and there is no way it was even a penalty
  • It's not a crusher tackle but I didn't see either Fensom put on report for his tackle on Flash Gordon in the 2nd half. From my position at the ground it looked very dangerous with Fensom having his hands between flashes legs and lifting him through the horizontal. Can someone assist?? Was someone put on report??
    • yep Fensom was put on report

Tarpine who was the other player in the tackle was not put on report but could be charged as well

  • Players turn their back towards the defence so they can offload..

    What should the defenders do?

    • Put his arms around the player and wrap up the ball.
    • I agree, I think it also stems from defensive teams trying to slow down the attack because of fatigue and the speed of the game in the last few years.
  • and then his chest is on the attackers neck...

    on report

    • Ye i see your point. When he goes to ground u end up in a crusher position.
  • Was watching a game from 1999 on that essential Eels DVD. Having grown up watching Parra in that era, it occurred to me I was a classic frog in the pot. The game has changed so much without me realising just how much. The tackles were simpler and the play the balls faster. There were no crushers. The game was a lot more attractive. Wrestling has "techniqued" a natural spark and fluency from the game. Such a shame. Very much why the Haynes, Milfords and Johnsons of the world are so loved. Their unpredictability breaks the monotony of over-coaching.
