Firstly, I'd like to say that this is not intended to demean the current batch of teachers out there. I know we have few few on the site and really look forward to your input.I heard the latest school results from around the globe and while Singapore remained the standout, Australia was on the slide.People are asking the question why? And I'd like to know people's thoughts.My view is this.In this country we don't view teaching as the career we should and therefore don't put enough emphasis on selecting and equipping teachers.Our brightest and best should want to become teachers, they should be paid like a top professional and the children should look up to them as the elite who are their to share their knowledge with them?Of course student need to be wanting to learn and made to attend to get the skills to have a career and contribute to this country.As a teacher, have you seen the quality decrease? Obviously teachers have the passion to teacher or they wouldn't be there. But should we be lifting the bar on this profession?Or is there another reason our education system seems to be losing in the global arena.Instead of following the US, should we be following Singapore but that means getting kids working hard and a discipline.Your thought would be good.

  • Blame it on technology apparently the use of I phones and devices change brain structure. The fast flicking aspect of it means children are not absorbing and retaining info on a deeper level. Their brains are frying.

  • Another issue my wife tells me about is teachers who have trained in maths being put in English classes for example.

    What's the go there? Maybe a current teacher can enlighten me.
    • They are doing that because of the very poor literacy rates amongst maths teachers...better late than never.

    • Yes that's true too . I don't get why when there is a glut of teachers waiting for a job. Cost cutting within department no doubt
    • In primary school they change teachers like scruts it's ridiculous. Young minds need to form a bond & a trust in their teacher & this isn't happening because of the constant rotation of teachers. Then at parent teacher sit downs they say in front of the kids don't force them to do homework it's not compulsory another fail. When my eldest son started high school I sat down with his maths teacher he said, they couldn't start teaching from where they hoped to because they were having to go backwards & re-teach times tables & other basics because the primary schools had let these kids down. Imo they try to teach so many things that they don't need to incorporate into their time frame instead of repetition of all the basics. These are just some of the problems I have noticed.
    • Hi Rider, There is currently a shortage of math, science,IdT, Special Ed and manual arts teachers so many young teachers take positions in those areas to enter the profession.
