Sports Journalism: code of ethics and complaints

A common complaint in these forums is about a handful of "journalists" who seem to not report both sides of a story and in some circumstances seem to purposefully report stories to align with a particular agenda. I would like all members who feel aggrieved by said journalists to write a complaint to the editors citing the newspapers code of ethics.More recently there have been a number of pointedly negative articles that have many members here wondering what they can do. Here is how YOU CAN STAND UP FOR YOUR CLUB. Check out the codes of ethics below, and send an email with every article you think contravenes ANY point within the ethics.Perhaps we as a site can put together a list of any contraventions we find within articles and send a signed web petition to the respective editors. For example SMH states:HONESTYHerald staff will report and interpret honestly, striving for accuracy, fairness and disclosure of all essential facts. They will not suppress or distort relevant facts. They will do their utmost to offer the right of reply, and they will separate comment from news.IMPARTIALITYStaff will not allow personal interest, or any belief or commitment, to undermine their accuracy, fairness or independence.HOSPITALITYStaff shall ensure that accepting hospitality does not oblige them or the Herald to their hosts. Invitations to attend a lunch or dinner should be repaid where possible. Accepting invitations for corporate hospitality where the purpose of the visit or the event is to develop contacts will be permitted, but staff shall inform their section editor before accepting such invitations. Here are some code of ethics I found for the main newspapers:The Australianhttp://www.theaustralian.com.au/help/editorial-code-of-conductSydney Morning Heraldhttp://www.smh.com.au/ethicscode/News.com.auhttp://www.news.com.au/more-information#I call on journalists such as ADRIAN PROSZENKO to prove he has not contravened any one of the above points in the SMH code of ethics.

  • Yobz. I'm sure it's all signed off , as all cochere in the meeting minutes. All reporters agreed. Hands on heart.
  • Proszenko get clicks, clicks drive ad revenue. Nothing lets ethics slide like the mighty dollar.

Most news sports sections are 90% clickbait nowadays. Drama sells, especially when it taps into a passionate fan base.
    • So true Capt, I remember back in the day - in the 80's when we were winning comps - the Daily Mirror sport section was either match reports, colour stories about players, or game previews, team lists etc. Hardly any of the agenda, ego driven sensationalistic garbage that we are subjected to on a daily basis now . . . . it was a simpler time :)
