  • Hopefully we do sign him as long as it isn't for 1 yr as they don't work. we need some aggression in the forwards as we don't have any.

    • Seriosly we are sewed if we dont singn him

      • is that like screwed if we don't sign him......asking for a friend.

        • tell ya friend i think if it wasnt for mosses boot we would go no where, so if not a line breaker like Spencer than who ?

  • The Eels didn't exactly overpower opposition forward packs in 2026. How much will Leniu + Sua change that, plus return of Hopgood, Doorey etc and development of Tuivati, Brown and Talagi? Let's generously call that an unknown but could improve?

Turning to the backs the news is currently worse than the question about the forwards. JAC is at best probably going to be suspended for most of the opening half the season. That will leave Kelly and Simmonson wings? Nanva backup? Iongi returns but we no longer have his two backups (Twiddle or Joash P). Penisini at right centre and Samrani at left centre, but each has had defensive issues and neither is a tremendous run threat. Nanva their backup? It's just thin at outside back. Again. And we simply lack outside back strike power.

Might the current status of both forwards and backs  mean that Ryles is forced to go all-in on forward using interchange passing and backs using a  'spread the ball' attacking strategy? In each case it is to rely on ball movement to create space not tackle breaking or speed?

I see the 2027 Eels as maybe getting better at staying in games by improving their defense, and when errors are minimized I think Moses and Luia can move the ball enough for the outside backs to be serviceable and TDS will create some chaos in the middle. But that's a play for 7th or 8th at best I think. As finals victories by Knights and Dolphins showed, unless your "in system" game has no flaws at all (Panthers?), you need to be able to play out of system to beat good in-system teams. I'm not sure the Eels look like they will have an out-of-system capability (TDS maybe?) so their 2027 fate may come down to their ability to get more consistently solid for 80 mins?

    • That's a fair assessment.
