Sorry Scott shultz very much overhyped!

A few days back fox was replaying lower grade finals matches from 2015.It highly cool cause it'll give me hint on some of the fringe players we've purchased.I was extremely looking forward to watching how Shultz goes after all the enormous praise he's been receiving on this site. Some are even choosing him in their round 1 line up.Sadly I was majorly disappointed after some of you's led me to believe that we've purchased the next big thing!.From start to finish this lanky built kid played entirely with nil determination. He meekly strolled for every hit up seemingly surrendering as soon a finger was laid on him which mostly lead to him being driven back while his skinny body not able to provide any sort of resistence. Also a bad read from him allowed his opposite to score untouched.I hope I'm way off with this but his posture and approach to being out their indicated that his persona lacks drive when it's needed. On the other hand Honeti seems to be a handy pick up and definitely knows his way to the try line by scoring at will. Most of us already have idea on Mitch Cornish. He had a blinder set up countless tries and grabbing one himself.Back to Shultz and after that display a Ron Massey cup selection and he should grateful.

  • Firstly, it's Scott Schulte. Not Schultz.

Secondly, I don't know what game you happened to be watching because I kept tabs on him myself & from some Cowboys fans in Townsville and across the country and they praised him tirelessly week in & week out.

Thirdly, no-one has even been saying he is the next big thing, myself included. What has been said that he has potential to succeed and is ready for an opportunity. He's good enough to make the most of it if selected.

Fourthly, this lanky kid you speak of is 92kg and probably bulking up a touch more this pre-season. His frame might look lanky but he's deceptively strong. And he has determination in bucketloads as evidenced by his approach to the game, to training and his great attitude and worth ethic to the game and himself. Considering he made more overall metres as a winger than the majority of the Cowboys forwards last year, should tell you that his body provides plenty of resistance, that he's hard to tackle and that his work-ethic is very high.

Lastly, yes, he does still need to work on some finer details of his defence and defensive reads but let's be real, which back doesn't have to do so?

His approach to the game is anything but what you described as he certainly has the desire, drive, attitude and determination to succeed in rugby league.

But overall, BA will call the shots and make the call as to who starts where. I rate Schulte highly based on what I've seen of him and have heard of him from numerous Cowboys fans and have made that clear in the past and above.

    • REKT

    • Lol I knew you'd be the first one to react Ricky.
You basically put it as if the sun shines out of his backside so I was a little disappointed.
The prelim final Cowboys v Manly.
I'd love it if we've found ourselves a little gem that can play.
I'd love it even more if you'd down the track that how much of a goose I am for being so critical of him.
    • In fairness you might of seen him in a bad game all players have them. Like any player signed without experience ill see how he goes over time.

For every jarryd hayne there is a fabian godell etc.
    • I assume your a good judge Ricky.
I suppose you can't rate him after 1 game.
I hope he makes a name for himself. SHULTE
    • For your information Fox Sports replayed the 2015 u20's Semi's and GF several days ago.  I to watched this game again with special interest in watching Schulte.  As my nephew was in the Manly team I watched the game with special interest live and again several days ago.

In the u20's Semi final game between Cowboys and Manly he looked like a plodder with no special skills the first time I watched the game live and again when replayed.  Schultz didn't look overly quick, didn't look like a powerful runner and just did his job in defence.

Schulte may have had a terrific year but in Cowboys vs Manly game he looked average.  Although, the other winger in the Cowboys u20's team this year was an elite player and had scored a massive amount of tries.

Although somewhat unfair from the one game I watched of Schulte I would rank him in the pecking order behind all of our NSW Cup outside backs.  Obviously this could change if he plays well in the pre-season.  He reminds me of our English import that never made his NRL debut.

If we keep Honeti I think he could be a surprise signing and make the jump to NRL because he has both power and speed.

  • So be it if I was.

I praised him positively, yes, but I didn't make him out to be a saviour of any kind and did point out the numerous areas he can improve in.

He is by no means the finished product, but he's ready for a challenge in first-grade and better than most of our other fringe options.

So far, based on what I have seen of him and his attitude to the game, his training and his team, there's no reason to believe why he won't become a talented player in the NRL.

  • "I know nothing"
  • Wait, what?
Which Cowboys side are we referring to? Their 2015 Holden Cup one?

  • The Cowboys's 2015 u20's did not make the Grand Final (It was Manly vs Penrith) and yes they did have a strong u20's team.

As stated above I only saw Schulte play once and that was against Manly in the semi-finals in a game that the Cowboys lost.  I have watched that game twice and on both occasions Schulte didn't do anything special and didn't show any hints of special skills ie., he wasn't fast, he wasn't powerful, he wasn't a strong defender.

I'm not sure if you are getting your u20's Cowboys wingers mixed up between Schulte and Gideon Gela-Mosby.  Gela-Mosby is a very talented Holden Cup winger and he scored around 30 tries in 2015.  Maybe you are getting your wingers mixed up.

At this stage I would suspect Shulte would be behind Faraimo, Folau, Toutai and Toha in the NSW Cup.  From the highlights I have seen of Toha I think he can play NRL and he looks like a faster version of Faraimo.  As Faraimo, Folau and Toutai have all played NRL I suspect Schulte is well down the pecking order and most likely will start in the Ron Massey Cup unless he shows something special in the pre-season.
