I'd be all for the stripping of points for the year/s it relates to.
It could be seen as goving us advantage for this year though and perhaps that's why they want a penalty for this year. Maybe we recruited players we wouldn't have been able to recruit otherwise. Maybe deals were somewhat back ended, making it possible to be under the cap this year when we otherwise would not have been.
I also think there is a strong element of the NRL wanting to be seen as taking this kind of indiscretion seriously. If they don't send a hard-hitting message then they'll be seen to be soft.
The same could be said about whether or not the breaches resulted in a good performance by the team or not. Doesn't really matter, a breach is a breach and even if it's not fair on the current players or supporters, the NRL has to do something.
Spot on Sharkies, the blind bias from eels fans over this is pretty embarrassing, whats worse is they dont even realise they are doing it, the rose coloured eels glasses are effecting their vision.
But if something has happened, even if it was 5 years ago, they will have to take some action, even though it isn't fair on the new players or fans. Otherwise it's not being fair to the clubs that haven't done the wrong thing (even if there are many who just haven't been caught yet).
And yes, we do struggle with finding sponsors. Every year it seems, although it's looking a little better than previous years, that's for sure. When we were really poor we didn't even spend the whole cap!
Frank, we have got a much improved squad but it has been gradually built up over years. Who knows, you could be right and if we are breaking the rules, by all means, the NRL should punish us. But it's too difficult to say one way or another because we don't know how the various players' contracts are structured For instance, how much is back ended, how much is being paid by former clubs, how much is deducted for our long serving player, Gallen?
Also, although we don't have access to many companies willing to be TPA's in the shire, I would say the majority would be sponsoring Gallen and now Maloney.
Gallen, Lewis and Heighington are only signed til the end of the year. Jack Bird and Valentine Holmes are only signed til the end of next year. Wade Graham will be next to step into the long serving player role in a couple of years, so his amount will be reduced. Brisbane were (maybe still are) paying $300k of Ben Barba's salary. Tigers did the same with Heighington and Fifita when they came.
We also had a lot of money left in the cap after we got rid of Todd Carney.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Sharks are angels and couldn't possibly be guilty of being dodgy (ASADA anyone?). I just don't think we have the money and access to sponsors that richer clubs have to enable them to do it. But I could be wrong....
