Canberra Raiders prop David Shillington has been fined after giving an unauthorised interview to the media.
"David is an experienced senior player at this Club and should have known better, he has been spoken to previously about errant comments he has made to the media and the negative impact they can have," the club said in a press statement.
Reports printed across numerous outlets Thursday and Friday quoted David Shillington as saying senior players at the Raiders pushed for Andrew Dunemann to be appointed head coach instead of Ricky Stuart and "the care factor has been down".
"Mal rang a few of us and asked us who we thought should be coach and we were pushing for Andrew Dunemann because of his relationship with our young talent," Shillington told The Canberra Times.
"But Ricky [Stuart] will be just what the doctor ordered in far as getting the team together ... sort out the off-field stuff and ensure players are pulled into line ... as the care factor has been down."
Canberra Raiders Press Release
The Canberra Raiders have fined David Shillington an undisclosed sum for breaching the Club’s Media Policy, after several stories appeared in the press today without the knowledge of the club.
“Comments made today across several media outlets by David Shillington, were in breach of the clubs Media Policy that clearly states ‘Players may speak on issues relating only to their own performance and that of the team. They should not comment on issues outside of their immediate responsibilities as a player without prior approval from Senior Management’,” said Raiders CEO Don Furner.
“David is an experienced senior player at this Club and should have known better, he has been spoken to previously about errant comments he has made to the media and the negative impact they can have.
“The Club always places great importance on the integrity of our brand and image and David’s comments were not endorsed by the Raiders organisation.”
“I have spoken to David today and he acknowledged that some of his comments were not appropriate and he was sorry.” Furner said.

Let's make an offer for Shillington now. The writing is on the wall for sure. If Shillo doesn't get on with Ricky then he must be a good bloke imo.
I've never been a fan of Jazz Hands, dunno how he even makes it into Origin
Good Idea. We need large forwards--like George Rose, ok for twenty minutes! And the Easts front rower ,cant think of his name, who is talking retirement. One good year left in him.
Shillo wants out of there asap!!
It will make my off-season if Milford goes. Raiders will be screwed for years if they can't hold onto him. Losing Shillo would be icing on the cake.
Hahaha step one of their destruction has already begun
This is music to my ears. I used to live in Canberra and I recevied countless texts from raiders fans saying they didn't want Stuart becasue he can't coach. Now it seems the players didnt' want him either. We all know the board was split as well. This is a a pretty precarious situation for Stuart now and I reckon he has really shot himself in the foot.
If he a lean season or two, and I think with the current raiders roster that is a good chance, then I think his career is over. Should have stayed at the eels, there is only one way up from dead last.
