    • I don't get the obsession over Kitione Kautoga? Nothing special with much errors in his game, I have Williams & Tuilagi infront for both back row positions.

      • Kautoga showed so much promise and improvement towards the end of the year. He runs a good line, is good in defence, gets through work and posesses an offloard. I just think it is promise from him, plus Ryles seems to be a big fan. But if Tuilagi beats him for an edge spot so be it, let's hope it works out.

      • You think Kautoga makes too many errors? But Taulagi is fine? 😂 dude who stole your brain?

  • Mark me down as another fan of Kautoga also he's the type of athlete we want on the edge.IMO I think he offers more lateral agility than Tuilagi whose also impactful with the ball and has the same issues as Kautoga. They both have an errors in there game but I feel as a player Kautoga has more upside than Tuilagi and you see it in defense the lateral agility and fitness I believe Gideon has it over Kelma.

Ive seen over the years Tuilagi make some really poor reads when it comes to defense when he knows he's beaten he takes the easy out he just jams in on nothing and the ball beats him everytime. This imo comes down to fitness.I think the mentioned is also a very straight line player any sought of footwork or quick decision making and he's toast.Physical player who needs to make a transition to the middle of the park if he wants a future with us.

Willams & Kautoga for me on the edge purely because of there athleticism and both are very dynamic with the ball.

    • Coryn, given what you've said here about Tuilagi do you think we are better served with him being a middle forward? Those are my thoughts.

      • Apologies, you've covered this already. I should have done a better job than a quick skim.

        • Transition is there for him he still has size  leg speed and is physical enough to play in the middle that's where imo where he'd be best served and have the ability to cover edge if needed.

My biggest bugger bare about Tuilagi is his edge defense decision making under duress I think that's his weakness. That's just my opinion JR may see different but another thing for me is what we are seeing now is what Tuilagi is I don't see a player that's improving a lot more if playing on the edge.

With regards to Kautoga I see more ceiling and growth within the player hence why I'd have him above the mentioned on the edge.

    • Yeah I don't see Tuilagi as a full-time 80 min player as his defence is not good enough. He is an impact player as he can run a killer line and deliver a great offload.

      Kautoga is better in defence.

      • Interesting discussion as I had this dilemma when choosing my side....the points everyone make are true, so it is a completely subjective discussion, but a good one to have.....the potential of Kautoga is pretty well untapped and in Kelma's case, I think the apprenticeship is over and he is now experienced enough to go to another level.....Kelma's preseason given what I am reading is going to a new level and I agree with LB that he is not an 80 minute player....I think he realises that (or has been told) and that's why the extra work in preseason.

Kelma has a specific dynamic just the same and when your side has limitations in the backline, I think if a player like Moses likes to trail him, he could score a lot of tries in the process. Ryles indicated in the "Johns podcast" that they are encouraged Mitch to do more of that. That specific dynamic (Kelma's) is steam rolling players and makes him so dangerous, when a side is getting up on you and stifling the attack.

We are in a rather unique situation and that we have in Williams, Kelma, Kautoga and Da Silva forwards who can run and score tries from 30/40 metres out....something the Parra sides have not had for years....even Doory and Moretti are capable of long breaks. The other dilemma is that these forwards "edges" have definate favourtisms where to position themselves......look at Kikau for the dogs, he runs more as a centre and defends on the edge. We haven't got anyone that attacks from that wide, our edges tend to be secondary middles as well......lining them up will be a quandry, especially if we get wider with Junior (Samoan version) a designated edge at times, say Williams can just hole up in the middle in those circumstances..

Line speed is also an issue, I personally feel that if you have very good line speed then you are more than half way there to finishing on top.......Smith gives us fantastic line speed, Da Silva provides fantastic dummy half speed (running) but I am not sure where our defensive line speed comes from when Smith is not on the field.

My guess is the speed of "the specific match/game" will be the coaching point?
